Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans were handsome, bright university students in 1942 Germany. As members of the Hitler Youth, they had once been enthusiastic supporters of the German renewal promised by National Socialism. But as their realization of Nazi barbarism grew, so did their moral outrage.

Hans and Sophie formed a small group of like-minded friends, which initially included two medical students, a student of philosophy, and a fifty-year-old professor. They self-identified as Christians from various traditions--Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodo--and they called themselves the White Rose. In a darkened studio lent them by an artist, they printed eloquent anti-Nazi leaflets, which they ingeniously spread throughout Germany.

A Noble Treason tells the true story of this underground group at the University of Munich that instigated, organized, and carried out the first overt resistance to Hitler's regime. What gives A Noble Treason its unforgettable and inspiring quality is the personality, character, and courage of the White Rose members, as they resisted the pull of wartime patriotism and overcame their fear of the terrible price they would pay for their dissidence.

The story of the White Rose is one of faith-inspired idealism in deadly conflict with ideological tyranny. Its theme is the ultimate victory of that idealism despite its bloody--and seemingly final--destruction by the state

  • This is third book on Sophie Scholl and the White Rose I have read in the past year. It is well written and well researched. The White Rose was a small organization of students who defied the Nazi government by printing a series of six leaflets exposing the truth about the Nazi's. We are given a lot of back story on the various members of the group and they met and formed their plans. The book also mentions a like between the Whiter Rose and another group of resistors called the Red Orchestra, by the Gestapo. The reason I have enjoyed the story of the White Rose is because it tells us a little known story that took place during the War. That some Germans risked their lives to defy Hitler and did what they could to try to let people know the truth about what was really going on in Germany. I would also recommend the German film Sophie Scholl the Last Five days. I recommend this book.
  • A hauntingly relevant story of the world in which we find ourselves today. A group of intelligent college students, a university professor, and a soldier offered all of their gifts and passions to be at the service of the Truth. The media belonged to Hitler, so this small group found a way to inform others of the moral crisis, that with its mark was painting the town with swastikas.
Their heroic example of fidelity is written with crystal clear clarity and summons us to protect the common good of man, which can be done with our prayers, our voices, and our pens.
"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."
    - G.K. Chesterton
  • The first edition of this book was published in 1979 and yet it still has a timely and inspiring message. While so many books about World War II examine the battles and politics, few examine them from the eyes of young adults whoose heroics were not on the battlefield but in their thoughts and convictions. When you read about the members of the White Rose, the reaction is to think how you might have responded to tyranny at such a young age.

I think the book describes the personality and character of the White Rose members in insightful detail. While the story of the White Rose is not particularly complex, the people who made up the organization were.

In the US now there certainly is nothing comparable to what people faced in Nazi Germany and thus one might consider this book just an interesting record of history. Yet I found the story to be inspiring and a good point of reference when dealing with the relatively minor challenges we now deal with. So many people simply make the best of what they can from the situation they are in. It is the rare person who tries and risks everything to improve the situation.

This is a good read. It is well worth your time and money.
  • I had never heard of this story and was blown away by it. History makes us feel that the average German citizen was in support of Hitler. Not so, and, so nice that it was young people who attempted, but paid dearly for their quiet subversion. Great read for anyone interested in WWII history, But the faith of these young people is the true story.
  • Excellent and easily able to know and love these young people. We may be heading for a similar situation in America. Why do people keep repeating evil history when they know it is going to destroy them?
  • I wish I could give this book ten stars. I underlined numerous passages on each page, made notes in the margins, dog eared pages, and have taken it on trips, hence the slightly bent cover and pages. That's proof of a well loved book!! Eloquently written, it presented the true story of Hans and Sophie Scholl's revolt against Nazi tyranny in a beautiful, thoughtful way that caused tears at times. I love this book so much.
  • I was a little dismayed in the first chapter, where the end is pretty much revealed, but soon forgot that dismay as I read the rest of the book. This book is riveting and holds you throughout. It is a little known story about the first spark of resistance in Nazi Germany. To be honest, it seems as if the book is more about Sophie's brother, Hans than it is about her, though she seems to be the more well known of the co-conspirators. I would love to see this book as a movie!
  • I had never heard of these young people who fought so courageously for what they believed in using a very dangerous weapon...words. If only all could take a stand for truth as they did..we would live in a better word.
