The Devil Heiress Historical Romance Signet Jo Beverley 9780451202543 Books Reviews

  • This is one of my favourites among The Company of Rogues books, and also belongs to the parallel trilogy of The Three Heroes. I recommend reading the series in proper order (it seems to me most negative reviews ofthe books mention that without previous knowledge of supporting characters they become confusing), but at least books 1 and 2 (An Arranged Marriage and An Unwilling Bride) as well as at least one of the other books about the three Georges (The Demon's Mistress or The Dragon's Bride) are necessary to completely enjoy this novel.
I like the cntral romance because the hero and heroine are well suited in character, intelligent, willing to stray from conformist attitude, strong, honest and open (this sounds strange since they both hide very essential information, struggling with their conscience, but they are open about their feelings and communicate well in many level). I liked the fact that the heroine was a rather plain girl and yet appreciation of her character and love for her made a dashing, quite swoonworthy hero passionately attracted to her and express admiration for her body. I liked the way they were able to forgive each other (the heroine needed to forgive more).
In some of Jo Beverly's Regency Romances the intimacy between the protagonists is challenged because ofprevious negative experiences (rape, sexual abuse) or the problem of physical violence. It is a pleasant fact that this book is free of such dark themes (except for the memory of one unpleasant forced kiss on the heroine, but it is mild and present intimacy is not significantly affected). The issue of physical aggression and violence (the heroine's fear of it) is present but she deals with it on her own, without involving the hero - perhaps it could have beenbeen interesting to see them talk about this problem at some point).
Another point I liked about this book is the importance of friendship, especially that between male characters but also between women. The bond between the Rogues was well known to me but the relationship between Three Georges was also very good, especially the way the hero was supported by his friend Con when he had to face the consequences of his wrongdoings.
I also like it in this series that it deals with the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars and the battle of Waterloo as it influences the life of the characters. It is shown that the ex- soldiers have to come to terms with their memories from the battlefield, some PTSD even, guilt because they survived while friends died, as well as the difficulty of resuming life in peace.
What I didn't like so much the situation that both the hero and heroine felt distrust towards the Rogues whom I liked very much from previous books - understandable but on Clarissa's part it was a sign of immaturity she could only overcome towards the end. Similarly, the distrust Clarissa felt for Arabella (another returning character, the ultimate Spinster Aunt) felt a little contrived.
Overall, I enjoyed this book verymuch and can only recommende to Regency romance fafans (after reading its prequels, of course)
  • Believe this is the best of the series. Jo Beverley writes well, wonderfully descriptive in action, character and setting. She has a vocabulary that is challenging. Excellent historical research. Intriguing plots. More complex characters. You met many of the characters through out the series and all their stories run through the series. I got hooked from the first free book and just had to read more and more of the series. The three George's all come together in a complex web. Hawk is an complex mess.
  • Oh how exciting this love story is. I loved it! Hawk and Clarissa make a wonderful match. I love how you wove everyone into this story, now the Rogues and Georges live, fight and stay together as do their wives and future wives and children.

I knew Dare was alive but wasn't sure if Therese was the one who had him, until she took Arabela, then I knew for sure, I was glad when it was proved true. Now I hope the next story is about his complete return to health, family and friends.

I'm on to book nine with much anticipation! Again Jo, great job.
  • I am thoroughly enjoying the ROGUE series. This book can take you from highs and lows. Major Hawk goes in search and to woo Clarissa in order to get to an inheritance that should have been his. All of the Rogues come back together, well most of them, to rescue Nicholas' kidnapped daughter. Although she does recap a bit in this book, to understand this story, you should read the first book AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE. It was well written with lots of suspense, intrigue, laughter and clean sexual content.
  • JoBev fleshes out her characters marvellously and then slowly brings the interconnected threads together, starting from the first Rogues' book. Thoroughly enjoyable, as Hawk and Clarissa do a slow pavane of falling in love.
  • I've liked all the Rogues's stories, this far, but this was really the best. I liked the H and h, I liked the heroine's personality. There was some good suspense in this book, and the bad guy...well, that would be telling, right? If you've liked the other Rogue stories, you won't miss with this one, but don't read this book unless you've read The Unwilling Bride or you will be lost. Happy reading!
  • I really enjoyed this book & was so glad to finally say goodbye & good riddance to the really bad character of the villainous female. Thank you Hawk.
  • I enjoy all of the stories from this author. They possess humor and passion through out the book. I would have given the story a five star rating but it lacked an epilogue.
