"I really enjoyed learning about the lives of these 50 believers, especially those commendable aspects focused on in the book. For each one, several aspects of their lives that encourage and challenges the reader were covered. It caused me to want to learn more of some of these people. There are other believers that I would have put above a few that were featured, but I enjoyed each one that was included. I would like to see more books of this type that gives similar brief histories of prominent believers from the past."

50 People Every Christian Should Know Learning from Spiritual Giants of the Faith Warren W Wiersbe 9780801071942 Books Reviews

  • I really enjoyed this book, but I am not so sure it is for everyone. Although it is entitled 50 People Every Christian Should know, and in a sense these are people that Christians should know about, with a few exceptions this book is about preachers. And it was written by a preacher seemingly for other preachers. It is heavy (as heavy as these short bios can be) on sermon prep, homoletical technique and ecclesiastical politics. These are the seas I swim in (except for ecclesiastical politics, I am not important enough for that nor am I part of a denomination) so I found this book fascinating and helpful, but I am not sure my wife would have.

For me the best part of the book was the bibliographic information that the author gives on each person discussed, both recommended biographies and recommended works. This book is a great gateway into deeper study of preachers of the past, especially those of 18th & 19th century England.
  • Wiersbe's books are always inspiring and this one will make you want to go out and do more for Jesus just like the rest of his books will. Particularly this Pastor. As a matter of fact, he could have titled this book (and should have) "Pastors Every Christian Should Know" because that's predominately who this book is about. Not a problem for me because it really helped me to appreciate all the hard working and innovative Pastors who paved the way for us today but generally speaking you may wish Wiersbe had put more missionaries and theologians who made big impacts for the faith in this book as you read it. This book is also a great introduction to the literature these Pastors produced that has been largely forgotten today. If not for those repackaging these older titles now for ebooks we probably wouldn't have them to read and with Wiersbe explaining why they are important we wouldn't have known they had existed. As I read the books he recommended for each person I wondered where this man found all the time to read these books! For that alone you should get this book.
  • I enjoyed every profile in this book. It went deep enough to become familiar with the person and their beliefs. It also guided you to considered the spiritual aspects of each person's journey in serving God. I love the list of their writings and have accumulated a lot of titles on my wishlist. It is definitely a book that will make you stop and give consideration to things in your own life. The listing of books after the notes at the back of the book, about and by each person mentioned will be invaluable when I am ready for other things to read. Whatever your beliefs this book has some meat of learning for all.
  • I really enjoyed learning about the lives of these 50 believers, especially those commendable aspects focused on in the book. For each one, several aspects of their lives that encourage and challenges the reader were covered. It caused me to want to learn more of some of these people. There are other believers that I would have put above a few that were featured, but I enjoyed each one that was included. I would like to see more books of this type that gives similar brief histories of prominent believers from the past.
  • Its true every Christian should know about these people of the faith! Very inspiring for your walk with God, it is not an easy road and those in this book can prove that but it's well worth the journey!! Very inspirational!! Anything from Warren is a good book!
  • I enjoyed learning about these 50 individuals who were used of God to minister to many and who left indelible marks in the Church for a blessing to us and our generation. May these men and women of God never be forgotten. I highly recommend this book because not only does the author give short biographies but also lists books that many wrote that are still available to us.
  • I appreciated Wiersbe's great introductions to these 50 Christian leaders. Each chapter was short enough to hold my interest and he pointed out further reading available by each person. Some of these saints I was already familiar with and others I was pleased to be introduced to. This book gives a glimpse and points you to other resources to find more in-depth information. Every Christian needs to know of the giants who have gone before and brought us to where we are today. This book is inspiring with the stories of sacrifice and faith of those who have paved the way.
  • What a great storyteller Wiersbe is! I love reading anything of his, but this was especially good. He makes everything interesting and relevant! I highly recommend this book. I have learned so much!

History on a grand scale - an enchanting masterpiece that explores the making of one of the world's most vibrant civilizations.

A People's Tragedy, wrote Eric Hobsbawm, did 'more to help us understand the Russian Revolution than any other book I know'.

Now, in Natasha's Dance, internationally renowned historian Orlando Figes does the same for Russian culture, summoning the myriad elements that formed a nation and held it together.

Beginning in the 18th century with the building of St. Petersburg - a 'window on the West' - and culminating with the challenges posed to Russian identity by the Soviet regime, Figes examines how writers, artists and musicians grappled with the idea of Russia itself - its character, spiritual essence and destiny.

He skillfully interweaves the great works - by Dostoevsky, Stravinsky, and Chagall - with folk embroidery, peasant songs, religious icons and all the customs of daily life, from food and drink to bathing habits to beliefs about the spirit world.

Figes' characters range high and low the revered Tolstoy, who left his deathbed to search for the kingdom of God, as well as the serf girl Praskovya, who became Russian opera's first superstar and shocked society by becoming her owner's wife.

Like the European-schooled countess Natasha performing an impromptu folk dance in Tolstoy's War and Peace, the spirit of 'Russianness' is revealed by Figes as rich and uplifting, complex and contradictory - a powerful force that unified a vast country and proved more lasting than any Russian ruler or state.

"Culture is paramount to a Russian. One of the worst insults I can use in describing someone is to say he is nekulturniy - not cultured. Creating a window into a nation's soul is no easy task. And yet Figes, through breadth of scholarship and an inviting writing style, manages to do just that. Having read this book ten years ago for the first time, I was quite excited to be able to read this again now that it is available as an eBook. Ten years later I find this book as remarkable an achievement as I did the first time.

This is not a complete cultural history of Russia. The time before the founding of St. Petersburg is hardly covered (though there is some excellent analysis in the chapter entitled 'Descendants of Genghiz Khan' about the links of Imperial Russia to Mongol Russia). And that does seem to be a drawback to the book. Though Peter may have broken the link with Moscow and Eurasian Russian, the centuries before Peter still affected Imperial Russia to a very wide extent.

But the period that is covered is a true cultural history of Russia. Literature and music are the primary focuses though the visual arts and architecture are also given some attention. In particular the author is most convincing when he fuses analysis of his theses with the words of the authors and musicians themselves. This brings alien and lost worlds to life once more. For anyone interested in Russian literature or Russian music, this is a good place to start.

Art is a mirror for a culture and a people. It reveals who they are, what they consider important, and what their dreams are. Figes shows how the art and ideas of the centuries covered were a mirror for how the Russians (and by Russians I refer to a tiny substrata of the people due to the limitations of literary and the bourgeoisie's growth) considered themselves and how they tried to understand themselves. In particular the tension between the Russia of Europe and the Russia of Eurasia and the unique situation the Russians found themselves in between these two worlds is a particularly interesting theme drawn out throughout the book. This duality is further complicated during the last two chapters when there is another split - that between Russia Abroad and Soviet Russia.

One window is not enough to explore Russia's culture because there is more than one Russia and more than one culture. And Figes does an excellent job of exploring the cultures of all these Russias. He is kulturniy."

Natasha Dance A Cultural History of Russia Audible Audio Edition Orlando Figes Ric Jerrom Audible Studios Books Reviews

  • I've been meaning to read this book since it came out a few years ago, but have been too intimidated--reading a book of this size about Russian culture is not for the faint of heart! Having read some of the author's other books, however, I knew that sooner or later I would pick it up.

As I feared, this book is not a very easy read, but those who persevere will be rewarded with an excellent account of most of the highlights of Russian culture literature, poetry, music, ballet, philosophy (of what it means to be "Russian"), and religion. As in his other books, the author does a fantastic job of relating various interesting facts and anecdotes about the Russian culture and its leading actors. One example--the tourist abominations known as Matroshka dolls are not in fact a "traditional" Russian item--during the late nineteenth century they were copied from a Chinese nesting doll by a factory owner looking for stuff for his faux-peasant workers to churn out for Russia's urban middle classes clamoring for "traditional Russian peasant" handicrafts. There are also many fascinating anecdotes about the personal lives of some of the giants of Russian culture, from Tolstoy to Prokofiev.

While many parts of this book are quite interesting, and the author is an excellent writer, large parts of the book are rather heavy-going. Personally I found the substantial part of the book describing the orthodox church to be extremely tedious. While religion is certainly a topic which has to be thoroughly addressed in any book about Russian culture, I don't think that any writer could make the topic interesting for me... Likewise for similar topics, such philosophical debates about the nature of the "Russian soul", or how various types of poetry reflect it. Also, the book skips around a bit, both chronologically and geographically, which got confusing at times.

All in all, this is a very well-researched and well-written book about Russian culture by an excellent author, but it is probably not for everyone. If you don't know much about Russia and are looking for a beach book to help you "understand Russia", this is not that book. If you are a Russophile or are particularly interested in particular aspects of Russian culture, you will probably find this book quite interesting--if difficult to read--as I did.
  • I'm ashamed to say it took me 15 years after buying this excellent book to read it. Russia is a country apart with a sweeping and fabulous cultural dimension that few Westerners appreciate. Most of the comments on the book rating it highly are accurate. The fascinating part on the development of Kandinsky's art and the influence of his trips to the hinterlands opened a new window into his art for me. Virtually every chapter elucidates some corner of the culture, especially the profound religious cross-currents and the rise of Moscow countering St Petersburg as the center of Russia. I'll read it a second time.

  • In Natasha’s Dance noted historian Orlando Figes examines the contributing strands of Russian culture that give Russia it’s very unique flavor. For one, Russian culture is not a monolithic thing but rather a mixture of competing forces like modernization vs tradition. This is played out in the battle between Moscow and Saint Petersburg one with more modern values while the other is welded towards tradition. You also get a clash of the European character vs. The Asian character of the Russian State.

Historical cultural studies are a complicated business. I’ve heard some critics say that the book is a Western interpretation of Russian culture. However, the reality is that all this book really says at its core is that the culture of people and places is a mixture of a wide variety of elements that often exist in tension with each other. This isn’t just true of Russian culture, but any population grouping on the planet.

A Search in Secret Egypt Paul Brunton 9780877286035 Books Reviews

  • This is a timeless classic. Written in the 1930's and still as relevant today, because it deals with an ultimate step in human consciousness, that is awakening to the reality of the Universal Self. When you read the first chapters about more superficial subjects, you may think 'where is this book going?' Then when it comes to the climax of the journey, it all fits together into one theme, which is about becoming spiritually reborn. It draws various threads together from ancient and modern Egypt towards the real meaning of the story of Osirus and how these spiritual themes of ressurection or rebirth appear in every religion. The courage and determination of Paul Brunton is incredible.

Whether it is crawling through tunnels full of scorpions - meditating alone in the Great Pyamid at night facing his inner fears - exploring crumbling temples at Karnak - handling venomous snakes - sifting through the fake and real fakirs - partaking in exotic Sufi ceremonies photographing and researching ancient records - he was a genuine Indiana Jones. It is a highly recommended well-written book that keeps on selling. And his other books are just as interesting.
  • Even though it was written around a hundred years ago this book has a contemporary feel to it.Paul Brunton reports in a matter of fact way and his accounts are believable. He was extraordinarily broad minded and well travelled for his time. His books have stood the test of time and are even more interesting today because of all we now know about quantum physics etc.
  • This is a good book but I thought it was going to be as good as " A search in secret India"......
  • Paul Brunton never ceases to amaze me. He narrates some unique experiences in his search in Egypt and his perspective. A gem of a book.
  • Good book if you are into this kind of stuff. Especially since it was written so long ago and nice to get a vision of what the world would have been back then.
  • Paul Brunton rocks!
  • I bought this book after reading the excellent "Pyramid Quest" by Robert M. Schoch. Mr. Schoch includes Brunton's description of his night in the Great Pyramid. I had high hopes for this book, but found the information quite dated, particularly regarding the Sphinx. Mr. Schoch proves conclusively in his book that the Sphinx is MUCH older than the pyramids, and that what we currently see as the head was re-carved much later from the original head. Somehow, Brunton misses this completely. Although somewhat interesting, Mr. Brunton's book seem just too out of date for me, and also a bit on the spacey side. If you want to learn something solid about the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid, read Robert M. Schoch's book instead.
  • Beautiful book, excellent condition.

"Great book, exactly what I was looking for. I don't always follow the lessons, but sometimes modify or glean from it. But it's a great starting point when I hit a choreography/lesson planning block. I love that each combination is broken down by counts. It's so descriptive, I can imagine the moves in my head very clearly as I read it. Well organized, full of interesting combinations."

  • Great book, exactly what I was looking for. I don't always follow the lessons, but sometimes modify or glean from it. But it's a great starting point when I hit a choreography/lesson planning block. I love that each combination is broken down by counts. It's so descriptive, I can imagine the moves in my head very clearly as I read it. Well organized, full of interesting combinations.
  • Such an undertaking as this isn't easy. Anyone who would assemble class combinations for use by dance teachers is bound to run into a little criticism and misinterpretation. Firstly, the combinations, for the most part, are Intermediate-yes some are advanced-not all. The counts are often not correctly marked. There are some misspellings. No french accents are used.
I'm sure someone who didn't have enough classroom material would benefit from usage.
Ruth Page edited a wonderful book-Class- notes on dance classes around the world-(1984) a must have for dance teachers, great combinations from great teachers-Advanced material. Another one is- Lessons in Classical Dance- Sophia Golovkina-Advanced material, detailed counts, spelling and use of french accents.
Last, but not least, simply go to Youtube and use Vaganova Tube, great combinations.
All in all for Stanwood's book- good try- keep trying.
  • Page by page and with pinpoint accuracy- lesson by lesson phenomenal workout-the importance of muscle memory and maintaining Barre work-
  • This is probably one of my favorite ballet books, and I have MANY! The combinations are easy to understand, of course easy to blend with your own style or level changes, money very well spent! )
  • Perfect for when I'm tired.
  • This book is a great resource for ballet teachers. As ballet teachers we all struggle periodically to keep our material fresh, but not too choreographic to make sure our students are getting good solid technique every single lesson. There are a lot of existing resources out there already, but most of them are extremely complicated, or not notated very well, or translated poorly from another language. I have many books with ballet combinations in them, but I hardly use them, because of the time it takes to even figure out what the combinations are. When I first got this book, I randomly selected combinations throughout the book and skimmed them for content. With every combination Tamara has written, I have been able to grasp the full concept of the enchainment with only a few seconds time invested. Each combination is written clearly with concise musicality and correlating port de bras.

I also loved that the content of her combinations was great as well. Her combinations are methodical and mathematical which, in my opinion, is the best for students of all levels, beginning to advanced, so they can meet their technique "head on" and see what is really going on in their dancing. Most of these combinations would be just as well given to 13 year old students as to advanced professionals. I appreciate being able to have a resource that shares my own teaching philosophy in this aspect.

I did find one echappe combination for pointe that wasn't square, but that wasn't enough for me to rate it any less than 5 stars.

Trust me, ballet teachers, this is something you're going to want for those days where you can't find fresh inspiration within yourself, and you need an outside voice to nudge you in the right direction.
  • This is a very comprehensive book with easy to follow combinations. A book of combinations so in-depth is a great resource for any ballet teacher!
  • This is a fabulous book and a must have for any ballet teacher. The combinations are easy to demonstrate, clearly written and just right for the advanced class. I love using this book for my classes.

The Magus of Java Teachings of an Authentic Taoist Immortal Kosta Danaos Books Reviews

  • I've been really into Nei Gong, Tai Chi, Qi Gong for quite some time now and only happened to view the Ring of Fire clip on Youtube this year. After seeing that and doing some research, I couldn't believe the stories I was reading about John Chang. I read both this book and Searching For The Master of Mo Pai, and I've got to say that this book is the better pick. Jim McMillan, while I love that he put Searching For The Master of Mo Pai out there for us, really just whined and complained throughout most of his book. That contrasts deeply with what Kosta Danaos has done in this book. The only thing that I wish either Jim or Kosta would have done for us is reveal the details/"Secrets" for level 2 or 3 of Mo Pai. Now that John Chang has passed, it doesn't seem like this school is going to survive. Maybe one day they will come out with that knowledge- but for now this account of John Chang and Kosta's experiences with him is a fascinated reading for anyone looking to learn more about The Magus of Java.
  • One of the absolute best books on actual high-level Alchemy from a real living person who has attained and Incredibly high level.

Because this master was studied by very scientific and Engineering minded student, a lot of these esoteric Concepts of the Taoist nature are broken down into real concrete terms which makes it more quantifiable for us to see.

Definitely one of the most impactful books in my life.

I have been practicing John Chang's method for many years now with serious results. YouTube my name and you'll see more of what I'm talking about.
  • I am fascinated with John Chang and wanted to learn more about him. There is no doubt that this book gives some insight into his life and philosophy, but it is fairly sparse overall in terms of content. Much of it is comprised of the musings of the author as well as his "theories" about how things work. This is fine to some extent, but there is so precious little about John Chang that it leaves us wanting a lot more.

Sadly, there are almost zero specifics into the actual training methods. I understand that in the follow up book by Danaos there is discussion that he is sworn to secrecy and so basically the world will never know these methods. While I appreciate and understand this, it's sort of a strange paradox with the supposed purpose of the text to enlighten and inspire the world! I mean, I suppose just the *idea* that this stuff exists could be enough for some folks... but without either actual evidence or at least some components of the way to get there, it's not much more than just stories, right? Perhaps I've missed the point, but I do believe in the power of qi/chi to a good extent; what I'm looking for is more than just some stories about it, however.

The book is well-written and it is interesting, it's just a bit disappointing in the end. I think it could have been so much more.
  • I sought out Kostas Danaos' book about THE MAGUS OF JAVA and have read it more than once. Having met John Chang personally after being a skeptic I can only attest to his powers, which I have felt pass through my flesh. Although only using 5 percent of this power he treats dozens of individuals daily at his home using a combination of acupuncture and a type of physical electricity generated from below his chest. Being a disbeliever I had asked him to take his shirt off expecting to see wires, there were none. My wife was one of his patients and I was asked to take my shoes off and hold her ankles. John then touched her and she started screaming. The current passed through me as I felt my heals fluttered with the current he generates. I have heard of many other stories and have personally watched him testing iron knives brought to him be the towns people for spiritual powers they may contain. John has changed my outlook of how I see the world and religion. This book and "Nei Kung The Secret Teachings of the Warrior Sages" are both fascinating reads, however without a personal belief I can see a skeptic not getting more than an interesting story line out of them. Again, I personally know this man, he is real.
  • I held off buying this book a couple years, mostly due to some criticism abounding on the Internet against the book's veracity. After just finishing the book, however, I found Mr Danaos' treatment of this extraordinary teacher to be even-handed. The book is an easy read, written in mostly narrative fashion by a skilled author who doubles as an engineer and martial artist. The narrative has several forays into history and science as well. Note that the author's Greekness is evident early on and throughout. I am now contemplating Danaos' second book on this topic
  • This is an easy to follow read that kept me going page after page until i finished it in a fee days. Very inspiring. I will say though that the last chapter goes off a bit on a tangent i didnt really care for. I was captivated by and far prefered the material centered around John Chang and his master over the slightly off projections and opinions of the auther himself. Over all though i would highly recommend this book to those interested in the internal arts and exciting possibilities of human potential.
  • I had been thinking of reading this for a while. Did not disappoint.
  • Lots of stories no real information - Very basic Tao and Tai Chi concepts - no “authentic teachings” or light bulb moments here.

Discrimination and Disparities Thomas Sowell Books Reviews

  • This author knows his topics and is able to share them in a way which keeps you engaged. It's really interesting how often the actions taken to combat perceived discrimination end up being core cause of the same. This is the type of material which needs to be taught in our colleges and universities. Just the facts and the truth supported with scientific research. In the first Chapter Disparities and Prerequisites he lays bare the role I.Q. has on one's real success.

Children of parents with professional occupations were found to hear about 2,100 words per hour at home. Children in Working Class houses heard 1,200 words per hour where children from homes which are on welfare were found to hear 600 words per hour. What about the advantages of being the first born in a family? Or are they really disadvantages? Hard work and perseverance are so important to really achieving success. But so is the personal desire to succeed.

His examples of those companies who have gotten so much right and dominated their industry for decades are lessons which must be paid attention to closely. He lists examples of house hold name type companies known globally that learned first hand the massive price they would pay for not evolving and staying abreast of technology changes. Even more startling is how these same companies once controlled the industries but failed to change with the times and now are nearly relegated to being footnotes in history.

Another great book by Thomas Sowell.......
  • Thomas Sowell is the man to read if you want a realistic, objective perspective. No goofy, over emotional, politics-of-envy-and-jealousy progressive narrative here.
  • Gives a logical view of the decisions being made around us. Example after example points out the numerous effects of what many might think are "good and bad" political or social decisions, and why something thought to be as common as "equal outcomes" isn't as common as we think. Overall I found this to be an enlightening and wonderful audio book, but this is not something you just listen to in the background while you sleep or complete complicated task, paying attention is paramount to understanding the points made throughout the book. Definitely listen during daily commutes or long rides in the car.
  • Thomas Sowell is a true gem of the American experience. A black man who grew up in NY during the 30's. A black man who got into Harvard BEFORE the Civil Rights Act. Sowell speaks in the common tongue for the common man, but delivers timeless wisdom and much needed common sense. Within the "short" book, you will find enough hard information which will enable you to never loose a debate again when it comes to the topics covered. Like most of Sowells books. A voice that will carry on for generations. Glad to live in the time of Sowell.
  • Sowell always does a good job showing that vision doesn’t equal outcome. Just because people want something to be true doesn’t make it so. He points out how people misuse statistics and , unfortunately, how people maintain incorrect positions in the face of conflicting evidence. Sadly, we have swapped opinions for analysis. Keep writing Tom, we need you.
  • Throughout his long and distinguished career Thomas Sowell has been a consistent stickler for truth. In this book he takes empirical aim at the truth about outcomes. In short, social scholars and economists inevitably over-simplify cause and effect and fail to accept that “grossly unequal distributions of outcomes are common, both in nature and among people, in circumstances where neither genes nor discrimination are involved.”

The book is short, to the point, and very clearly written. You don’t need a degree in sociology or economics to follow. The arguments are steeped in common sense, which is where we often lose sight of the truth in our admirable but misguided desire to do the “right” thing.

The problem is actually much bigger than the areas of social justice addressed in the book. It is a problem that is quickly eroding the value of all of our political, social, educational, and economic discourse.

Type “This is what science says about …” into Google and you’ll get close to 1.5 billion hits. News outlets and social commentators use the heading daily. In reality, however, “science”, which is an empirical methodology, not a body of knowledge, probably says nothing about the topic, and whatever apparent “facts” the author includes probably say even less in the larger context of truth and meaning.

Technology, of course, is making the problem worse. Technology gives a voice to every would-be opinion-maker, reinforcing the false perception, in all of its 1’s and 0’s, that math and statistics are inevitably and inherently “true.” It’s a ruse. To the extent it is true it is typically so only in the one dimension in which the writer of the article used it to advance his or her point. That’s not the multi-dimensional and dynamic world, however, where most important reality, like opportunity, compassion, and fairness actually lives.

My only complaint is that the electronic book is over-priced for what it is. The author doesn’t typically set the price and Mr. Sowell is a premium intellect that deserves a premium price tag on his thoughts. It is, nonetheless, an empirically supported conclusion, so I’m hopeful Mr. Sowell will forgive me that.

  • Love that Tarascon estimates the price. I can flag pages for quick lookup (what dose of Tamiflu for what weight, etc). The pocket size is about the size and weight of a cell phone without having to open and search an app. I had paper editions, then the Tarascon app, then returned to paper. Sometimes paper is faster ;)
  • Perfect. This pocket review is perfect for a quick reference. It isn’t filled with every drug/treatment known to mankind like a full pharm book, but it has info on many of the key players. It fits nicely in my pocket, it’s not bulky, and it’s divided by system. I like it very much. If you have very bad eyesight, the print may be too small, but other than that it’s perfect.
  • Don't get the kindle edition it always hangs and I cant even open the contents most of the time when I need it, total waste of money. I would gladly return it if I can!
  • I love this little pocket book, I use it daily in my medical practice as a physician. Easy to use reference and quite complete for its size for the common and not so common medications
  • In this digital age sometimes you need to have a paperbook to look up medications. I have been depending on one of these since 1999.
  • Bought for my husband. He buys one every year.
  • This book is always consistent
  • Excellent

In 2008, Turin and Sanchez up-ended the world of fragrance with their critically acclaimed Perfumes the A–Z Guide, one of ’s best books of the year, described by John Lanchester in the New Yorker as “ravishingly entertaining,” by India Knight in the Sunday Times (UK) as “one of the best books I have ever read,” by Hilary Mantel as “opinionated, knowledgeable, sharply written and surprisingly comprehensive … a purely enjoyable book,” and by Philip Hensher as "a work of the highest criticism, one which elevates writing about perfume to the best sort of writing about wine or rock music." Ten years later they bring their inimitably passionate, erudite perspective back to the hugely changed world of fragrance, to sort out which of over 1,200 new individual perfumes deserves celebration (and which condemnation). The 2018 guide includes all new content, including - “Ten Years Later,” looking back on the last decade of fragrance - “The Shifting Shape of Fragrance 1918–2018,” describing changes over a hundred years of - fragrance history - all new Frequently Asked Questions - over 1,200 individual perfume reviews masculine and feminine, mainstream and arcane, from the latest Guerlains to a five-star masterpiece by a small, little-known Malaysian firm - an expanded glossary - top ten lists, this time including not just top masculines and feminines but the best introverts and extroverts, the best retro, the best citrus, the best oud, and more

Ebook Perfumes The Guide 2018 Luca Turin Tania Sanchez 9789949885534 Books

"They’ve done it again in their newest guide! Hilariously acerbic and unforgiving, but also glowing praise for the deserving and unforgettable.

I wouldn’t want to create an awful, or even worse *BORING* perfume and have it reviewed by LT and TS: however, I’m darn glad bad perfumes exist because of the incredibly, wonderfully sardonic writing by this duo.

This book is like 700-thread count sheets and fine wine to the experienced perfumista, but is also an excellent place to start for the newbie who wants to learn about why perfume is more than just what the sales rep mercilessly douses upon you at Macy’s. LT & TS reveal why the art of perfume is intertextual: rich in history and influence of different eras and genius perfumers. They also divulge secrets of what makes great perfume: those that are technically skillful, but also courageous, innovative, perhaps iconoclastic, the estranging of the familiar, and the familiarization of the strange.

If you’ve been thinking about just how boring another soulless aquatic Cool Water clone at the local Sephora is, this guide is for you. If you’re not sure you care about perfume, but you like the caustic and unsparing writing of Oscar Wilde and George Eliot, this guide is still for you. (We’ll just try to make you care by osmosis anyway.)"

Perfumes The Guide 2018 Luca Turin Tania Sanchez 9789949885534 Books Reviews

  • Turin and Sanchez’s monumental book Perfumes The A-Z Guide was profound, necessary, passionate and compelling. It stimulated an evolutionary leap in perfumery that changed the landscape and inspired hundreds of new perfumers to use their talent and imagination. It resulted in a world of beauty no one thought possible. It was so vivid, stylish, hilarious and technically good, even critics with little interest in perfume considered it one of the best books of the year.

Perfumes The Guide 2018 is a different approach that covers all kinds of fragrances, but puts even more emphasis on niche and artisan perfumes. Like the first book, its substantial, extremely easy to read and highly entertaining, .but for many people this book is a great assist to those attempting to understand and define the genuinely worthwhile creations. Perfumery has changed radically. It's mind-blowing. Many of today's fragrances have to be smelled to be believed, and to generate context. The book focuses, not upon what is found at Neiman Marcus, (etc etc), with their corporate, mass consciousness, profit generating agendas, but rather the wave of perfumes that represent craftsmanship and art (as was centuries ago). That sometimes go to great lengths for the ingredients (and sometimes don't) to develop something of beauty. The pioneers, scientists, explorers, who are often more interested in what they can find, and combine, and present.

At a time when so many people are simply looking to take your money, Perfumes The Guide 2018 is more relevant than ever. Luxury may have lost its luster, but this book will help you find the good stuff.
  • I am well familiar with the earlier edition (Perfumes The A-Z Guide) and frequently reread snippets of it.

The rave points 1) all-new material. No rehashes of fragrances reviewed in the earlier edition. 2) enjoyable prose. I'm still not sure whether I enjoy the rhapsodies or the pans best, because each type of review is worth reading. 3) learning. Dr. Turin's understanding of perfume structure is pretty much beyond me (and I'm not sure I care all that much), but I always learn something from reading his comments. 4) discovering something new to smell. Several of the niche/independent companies mentioned in reviews in this edition were previously unknown to me, and I'm enjoying getting to know their fragrances. 5) entertaining. It's always fun to disagree with a review and snort loudly and disparage the authors' parentage, etc., while impatiently swiping the page. (Twilly gets 5 stars? PUHLEASE. It's a chemical disaster, with not only that flat chalky baby-aspirin orange note, but also the eye-stabbing lab-created jasmine thing completely overwhelming the ginger and tuberose.)

The quibbles 1) not nearly as comprehensive as I'd expected. I get it, this is all new, but there are frequently only a few fragrances reviewed from a prolific line. Samples of some lines mentioned are unobtainable by me in the U.S., even in this age of online orders. And some prominent indie/niche lines aren't reviewed at all. (I suspect, for example, that after Turin made a less-than glowing comment on his now-closed blog, Perfumes I Love, about the "natural" ingredients of Hiram Green fragrances, HG declined to have his scents included.) This kind of hit-or-miss inclusion does readers, particularly ones who'd like to use this guide as a "try this line" advisory, a minor injustice. 2) the balance of reviews written by co-authors seems off. I haven't counted, but a casual reading displays far fewer reviews written by Tania Sanchez than I'd expected, given the makeup of the earlier edition. Frankly, I miss seeing her writing and I feel that maybe the reviews are skewed toward one person's tastes rather than a mix of preferences. Which brings me to my third point. 3) personal preferences heavily influence ratings. Unavoidable, probably. All fragrance reviewers have preferences, and those tend to influence what they choose to review as well as the ratings. Even so, this volume seems far more skewed toward Turin's preferences than the earlier edition, and that in itself was fairly influenced. (For example, some really cutting reviews are reserved for scents that seem to have gotten his hopes up by referencing in their names a raw material he loves, such as iris or gardenia, and then turning out to not feature that material as prominently or as correctly as he'd hoped. I, on the other hand, could not possibly care less whether an Iris-This named perfume actually smells like iris butter or not, since I don't love that material, and I wish he'd quit having those knee-jerk reactions.)

Even with the quibbles, I've enjoyed this ebook very much and will probably order the paper copy when it is released. The writing is still a delight.

  • Don’t waste your money. The reviews on LuckyScent are irrefutably more helpful than what’s in this book, and they’re free. Fort & Manles’ Maduro gets 2 stars, which means “not good”, and a one sentence review (have you even really smelled it?), whereas Calvin Klein’s’ One gets 4 stars and over nine sentences in its review (probably because there’s a lot of searchable reviews to pull from online). Olfactory interpretation can be subjective, but this is silly. Many of this books reviews are on scents I can find in a department store, such as, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Kilian, Issey Miyake, Hilfiger, Hugo Boss, Estee Lauder, Michael Kors. Where are the reviews for Clive Christian, D.S. & Durga, Stephane Humbert Lucas 777, Profumum Roma, or Mona Di Orio…
This book is less scent review and more dime-store romance novel. If I wanted to read somebody else’s’ non-descript, “bad writing” I would just read the blog posts from Fragnatica, again, free.

“I urge everyone who wants to understand just how wonderful marriage can be to read and reread this book. But I also urge psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, pastors, missionaries, and lay counselors to study it as well. I urge them because it not only covers a host of important aspects of marriage and includes practical tips but it also has deep spiritual and emotional concepts and even unconscious personality dynamics and how we all, to one extent or another, deceive ourselves in many ways that are detrimental to our marriages” (Paul Meier, MD, founder of the national chain of Meier Clinics).

You’ll never be happy in your marriage if you don’t deal with issues head on, such as communication, conflict resolution, and intimacy. J. A. Alexandre, a pastor and relationship expert, helps you build and maintain a loving relationship with your spouse in this guidebook to marital bliss.

You’ll learn how to

  • —rekindle the flame of love that brought you together,
  • —avoid choices and situations that could endanger your marriage,
  • —get the maximum amount of enjoyment in being with your partner, and
  • —recognize the needs that aren’t being met (including your own).

By revealing results from surveys he’s conducted during marital retreats, the author shares specific behaviors that can cause trouble in a marriage. More importantly, he provides ideas and guidance on how to overcome problems.

Regardless if you are contemplating marriage, already married, or seeking to help couples, you’ll understand that marital happiness is a choice by seeking to understand the Word of God while confronting the challenges of everyday life.

Physician and popular New York Times contributor Aaron Carroll mines the latest evidence to show that many “bad” ingredients actually aren’t unhealthy, and in some cases are essential to our well-being.

Advice about food can be confusing. There’s usually only one thing experts can agree on some ingredients—often the most enjoyable ones—are bad for you, full stop. But as Aaron Carroll explains, if we stop consuming some of our most demonized foods, it may actually hurt us. Examining troves of studies on dietary health, Carroll separates hard truths from hype, showing that you can

  • Eat red meat several times a week. Its effects are negligible for most people, and actually positive if you’re 65 or older.
  • Have a drink or two a day. In moderation, alcohol may protect you against cardiovascular disease without much risk.
  • Enjoy a gluten-loaded bagel from time to time. It has less fat and sugar, fewer calories, and more fiber than a gluten-free one.
  • Eat more salt. If your blood pressure is normal, you may be getting too little sodium, not too much.

Full of counterintuitive, deeply researched lessons about food we hate to love, The Bad Food Bible is for anyone who wants to forge eating habits that are sensible, sustainable, and occasionally indulgent.

"Very entertaining and informative book about nutrition and diets. I am a retired nurse and have always felt that common sense was the basis of a good diet. And I have also cast a skeptic eye on any research studies that banned one kind of food or diet. Dr Carroll deals with these and other issues. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a balanced and sane diet. I also recommend is YouTube channel, "Healthcare Triage." I'm a regular watcher. This is the kind of book you want to read more than once but you also want to shave with friends and family."

  • I am writing this review because my cousin wanted me to read this book and, having done so, I figured I might as well make my comments public. I am a clinical endocrinologist in Hawaii in practice for 30 years, with a slightly academic bent.

I would give this 4.5 stars, if possible---my overall recommendation is that many people should read this book! I am sympathetic to the author's main points as they apply to people who do not have a metabolic disease Many of the recommendations for dietary restriction that are made by health care professionals for people in general are lacking in a solid scientific foundation. When there is evidence for potential harm, the actual risk for an individual is often exaggerated. And when we think about the potential harm to a person's health from consuming a particular food or drink, that should take place within the context of a person's life, the pleasurable aspects of eating or drinking that particular item as well as the social context.

Now for some criticisms, which are probably more meaningful to someone who has already read the book
    1. The author tries to convey to the reader the importance of looking at the type of evidence that is reported, whether a study is retrospective or prospective. The strongest evidence comes from (prospective) randomized double-blind placebo-controlled studies. When looking at outcomes such as a coronary event or death it is difficult or impossible to design such a study for alcohol, coffee, meat, eggs, etc. Doing any prospective study comparing consumption vs non-consumption is a challenge. Consequently he relies very heavily on what are called meta-analyses of retrospective studies in which an author selects studies from the medical literature that meet certain criteria and then pools the results in some way. While doing so is better than cherry picking studies to support a preconceived viewpoint, the decision about what criteria to use may introduce bias. Also, putting together data from a lot of weak studies does not make a strong study.
    2. The author says that his recommendations are for healthy people without metabolic problems, but if one looks at the American adult population, that excludes a very large number of people. Many people do not even know that they have metabolic issues. Also, many of the studies that inform us regarding the effects of various foods and drinks are based on data that include people with metabolic disorders.
    3. The author seems to lack a larger perspective on the issue of cholesterol metabolism and misrepresents a few issues, I believe. He says that serum triglyceride levels are associated with heart disease, but he does not mention that they are also inversely correlated with HDL-cholesterol levels, which are together a part of what is called "the metabolic syndrome." It is this (genetic) disorder of metabolism rather than the triglyceride levels themselves that is bad for heart health. Second, he lumps monounsaturated fats into the same category as polyunsaturated fats, which is incorrect because monounsaturated fats have a positive effect on cholesterol metabolism, not the same for polys. Moreover, he fails to discuss the strong support (including prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled studies) for the cholesterol hypothesis that higher LDL-cholesterol levels cause coronary disease and that lowering these levels reduces risk.
    4. In the Introduction he claims that the obesity epidemic of the late 20th century was caused by the shift from intake of fats to carbohydrates. In his chapter on Butter he states "There is one thing we do know about fats, however. Fat consumption does not cause weight gain. To the contrary, it might actually help us shed a few pounds." I believe the obesity epidemic is more accurately related to an increased total calorie intake available through fast foods, etc. To state that fats do not cause weight gain is on the face of it ridiculous, but what I believe he means to say is that substituting equal calories of carbohydrate for fat will not achieve the desired goal. The problem with a quick lunch of hamburger, french fries, and a soda is neither the fat alone nor the carbohydrate alone, but the total calorie intake as it affects weight.

I learned a lot from reading this book and plan to look up some of the studies that he references. This is a very worthwhile read.
  • When I was a kid, there was a seasoning called Accent. Both its TV commercials and its canisters featured a little horn with the slogan “Wake up the flavor.” We poured that stuff on everything (except for our Captain Crunch), often accompanying our culinary adventures by making little horn sounds.

It turns out Accent was pure MSG. Who knew? And yet we lived to tell the tale. Neither me nor my siblings ever got headaches as kids. Or ever get headaches as adults. Indeed, we seem to have acquired some headache immunity from using this stuff. (Correlation, not causation, a good researcher would say.)

The reason, as you’ll learn in The Bad Food Bible, is that MSG isn’t bad for you, even apparently in the quantities we devoured. (Yes, we know – you get a headache when you go to a Chinese restaurant. That could be your imagination, or you may be one of the few people with a sensitivity to it, just like a few people have sensitivities to other foods.)

MSG isn’t the only maligned food. Is butter good for you or bad? Milk? Artificial sweeteners? Organic foods? Sugar? Meat? Red meat? Tuna? Coffee? Wine? Eggs? Salt?

Oh, and don’t forget gluten. Turns out, virtually every one of these foods has been studied in depth…and here the studies in both directions are summarized and sourced.

I feel like this book plays it right down the middle and that the thumbs-ups and thumbs-down can be trusted.
  • Very entertaining and informative book about nutrition and diets. I am a retired nurse and have always felt that common sense was the basis of a good diet. And I have also cast a skeptic eye on any research studies that banned one kind of food or diet. Dr Carroll deals with these and other issues. This is the kind of book you want to read more than once but you also want to shave with friends and family.
  • Loved this book, the most significant thing I got out of this book is how nutrition research is lacking at best, how things become trends from small sample size studies, I know people are always looking for the magic bullet, we want to be able to eat anything then take a pill to negate the calories. Deep down I think most people know how they should be eating, there is no great revelation, eat anything in moderation.
  • This was an eye opener very help for me to eat better.
  • The book is organized into eleven chapters dealing with particular hot-button food issues--GMOs, coffee, butter, meat, gluten, alcohol, salt, eggs, diet soda, MSG and non-organic foods. Along with the usual sections like an introduction, noes, index and acknowledgments there is the author’s conclusion/philosophy. I found this particularly helpful because after reading each chapter I could see how the conclusion incorporated the material in a common sense guide with an eye, but not obsession, toward healthy living.

Each chapter explains current research and/or thinking on the subject so the reader can form an opinion on the matter, or at least see that often nutritional advice stating certain foods are to be avoided may simply not have sufficient scientific evidence backing the claim. The book is written in a way that makes what can be dry/tedious nutritional information accessible, easy to read and follow. The conclusion chapter helps the reader consider a broader view that permits enjoying food, one of the pleasures of life, without unnecessary anxiety. I learned a great deal and recommend the book.
  • Great book! Aaron always writes in a way to keep you interested.
  • Excellent book. Lots of good advice, but probably best geared towards a fairly health literate audience.
