"This is a response to the one star rating. The book is phenomenal. After a lifetime of passion for art including a university and graduate (PhD) education in the social sciences and humanities I found much that was new to learn and love in this book. It challenges elitist notions of what art is or should be with its innovative chronology rather than "movement" inspired organization and I think is in itself a cutting-edge work of literary art. The pieces are heavily cross-referenced so you lose nothing by having all the art from the same movement dispersed rather than side by side. Each description is witty and brings a fresh perspective, motivating me to read even the descriptions of pieces I have read whole books about. I have read it cover to cover and given copies to friends as gifts. It is nearly worth its hefty weight in gold ($1,000 give or take a few hundred)."

- This huge book contains a brief summary of the history of human artistic and cultural achievements. The art works are arranged in a stictly chronological order and you will be able to appreciate the way human cultures developed. While different artistic traditions started differently, with time they tend to merge and influence each other. Every work is accompanied by a succinct label stating the place of origin and the approximate time that it was made, so you will never be lost.
The pictures themselves are of high quality. The descriptions are also engaging rather than prosaic. I've learned really a lot through this gigantic book. - I was surprised by the fine image quality and the concise, but informative text accompanying the images. I am actually reading this book as I would a novel. What makes it especially interesting is that it is in chronological order, so the reader can compare art from different regions that was made contemporaneously. Please note, I was NOT an art major and am surprised at how interesting I have found this book to be.
- I bought this for my husband, who loves art and coffee table books. The pictures are gorgeous, and the sheer size of the book always catches the attention of guests. The only downside is the size of the book--this baby is gigantic! It's so heavy, I'm worried the binding will break since it's the same old glue-and-thread binding of all hardback books. So far, it's still in one piece, and nearly everyone who comes to our house cracks it open.
I don't recommend trying to "curl up" with this one though, you'll get some mighty mean dents in your legs! But per pound, it's definitely the coolest gift for any art admirer, and sparks a lot of conversation at gatherings. - The book itself is amazing. The way the book was shipped was less than sub-par. As result of providing nothing to protect the book inside the box, many pages are bent/folded, which has lead the back cover to warp. Corner wear is significant. I am quite annoyed at having my new book being in such a state even before I have opened to the first page.

- Wonderful book, full of colorful pictures and interesting information about great art pieces. I keep this at my coffee table and my friends always want to borrow it. Thankfully it is bulky and heavy enough that nobody will sneak out with it. If you love art this book is a must.
- A beautiful book of images...fascinating to see artifacts were being made throughout human existence in the same year but in different parts of the world. Amazing to see how culture expresses itself throughout history. Another well made Phaidon book.
- Love this book, I bought it for a young artist in Cuba, he will never find this book in his country so I'm traveling there and surprised him. Thanks for the opportunity to save me some money.
