Hello, world.

Facebook's algorithms shaping the news. Self-driving cars roaming the streets. Revolution on Twitter and romance on Tinder. We live in a world constructed of code - and coders are the ones who built it for us. From acclaimed tech writer Clive Thompson comes a brilliant anthropological reckoning with the most powerful tribe in the world today, computer programmers, in a book that interrogates who they are, how they think, what qualifies as greatness in their world, and what should give us pause. They are the most quietly influential people on the planet, and Coders shines a light on their culture.

In pop culture and media, the people who create the code that rules our world are regularly portrayed in hackneyed, simplified terms, as ciphers in hoodies. Thompson goes far deeper, dramatizing the psychology of the invisible architects of the culture, exploring their passions and their values, as well as their messy history. In nuanced portraits, Coders takes us close to some of the great programmers of our time, including the creators of Facebook's News Feed, Instagram, Google's cutting-edge AI, and more. Speaking to everyone from revered "10X" elites to neophytes, back-end engineers, and front-end designers, Thompson explores the distinctive psychology of this vocation - which combines a love of logic, an obsession with efficiency, the joy of puzzle-solving, and a superhuman tolerance for mind-bending frustration.

Along the way, Coders thoughtfully ponders the morality and politics of code, including its implications for civic life and the economy. Programmers shape our everyday behavior When they make something easy to do, we do more of it. When they make it hard or impossible, we do less of it. Thompson wrestles with the major controversies of our era, from the "disruption" fetish of Silicon Valley to the struggle for inclusion by marginalized groups.

In his accessible, erudite style, Thompson unpacks the surprising history of the field, beginning with the first coders - brilliant and pioneering women, who, despite crafting some of the earliest personal computers and programming languages, were later written out of history. Coders introduces modern crypto-hackers fighting for your privacy, AI engineers building eerie new forms of machine cognition, teenage girls losing sleep at 24/7 hackathons, and unemployed Kentucky coal-miners learning a new career.

At the same time, the book deftly illustrates how programming has become a marvelous new art form - a source of delight and creativity, not merely danger. To get as close to his subject as possible, Thompson picks up the thread of his own long-abandoned coding skills as he reckons with what superb programming looks like.

To understand the world today, we need to understand code and its consequences. With Coders, Thompson gives a definitive look into the heart of the machine.

"This is a good history of programming and programmers. I have read much of the historical material before in other books but this book manages to present new material in every chapter. This book seems to be targeted for the non-programmer or maybe someone who works with programmers and wants to figure out why they do things the way they do. First - there is not one programmer type but they good programmers share some common qualities that the book delves into for the reader. When my son wanted to become a programmer I feared there was one quality he did not have - ability to deal with frustration. The book details why that ability is essential for all good programmers to survive and thrive. I loved the book so much I purchased copies to give out to co-workers that have to work with coders."

Coders The Making of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World Audible Audio Edition Clive Thompson René Ruiz Penguin Audio Books Reviews

  • Clive Thompson’s new behind the screen look at the tribe of coders is by no means perfect. A journalist by profession, Thompson’s chapters somewhat read like a series of loosely connected articles for the New York Times magazine. But these glances at different aspects of the computer programming world do incisively capture the culture for both good and ill.

Written primarily for those who are not members of the tribe, as a data scientist I cannot say I learned much by reading it. But its depiction of the hyper-masculine, intellectually preoccupied, socially inept world of programming did resonate. Of course, Thompson is not the first writer to depict this world. Nor is he the first to opine that the immense amount of harm caused by these new technologies is the result of the blindnesses of this monoculture. But updating readers on the cultural changes in computing from the 1950s to the 1990s to 2019 is important for everyone who has to live in the partially online modern world.

Thompson also makes a concerted argument that the lack of women and minorities in computers is the result of cultural bias and not in any sense genetic. Though largely relying on anecdotal evidence the argument grows increasingly persuasive as the book advances. I wish Thompson had relied more on data and less on personal testimony. Given, however, that this is an issue with significant cultural and financial implications, it’s encouraging to see this position well-articulated.

I ended up thinking after reading it through that the book is a light and mostly pleasant way for those not in coding to understand something of this ever growing part of modernity. Not a must-read but something that non-coders will both benefit from and enjoy.
  • <em>Coders</em> is a sign of its times instead of comprehensively covering the topic of code, how it works, and where it comes from, Thompson does some of that, which is to be commended, and a lot of fomenting discord through relentless stereotypes about race and sex. He seems to believe women and some people, based on the color of their skin, cannot code as some other groups can, and that implication is disconcerting, pervasive, and annoying in his book.

But Thompson cannot help himself; he is a creature of the media and he doesn't realize the bogosity of the water in which he swims. Instead of focusing on the product and how it is made, he focuses on the race and gender of the people making it. Software can be written by anyone; that is a topic to be celebrated. Thompson repeatedly misses the forest for the trees of race and gender.

There is a great book stashed inside this performatively "woke" book. Thompson keeps showing us glimpses of that great book, then hiding the great book away so he can repeat bland media formulas about how women and minorities are hurt most. News at 11. If this book is read in the far future, it will be seen as yet another example of the media class's obsessions in this age; instead of focusing on technology and how to build the future, Thompson focuses on media-enabled squabbles. We know that you've replaced church with the church of "social justice;" we don't need evangelizing for it in everything you do.

He claims, "Feminism and diversity are, indeed, sore points in the industry" (22). No, they are not; they are sore points in the grievance studies and media industries. Those are studies bent on complaining; tech is bent on building the future. He goes on to claim that "The racial makeup [of most tech cos] is not more diverse," then goes on to admit that Asians are prevalent in tech. Do they not count as diversity? Why does Thompson systematically exclude Asians? His own racial insensitivity shows here; performative wokeness shades back into the racism it claims to oppose. Thompson says early hackers "admired great code even if it came from someone with no rank at all" (37)—isn't that meritocracy?

Thompson asks, "What makes programming so often inhospitable for women?" He assumes it is, ignoring the vast number of successful women in the field. Why not focus harder on what makes coders, rather than the race or sex of the coders? Because that wouldn't reify Thompson's world view. We get it, Clive you are a moral hero while the rest of us are mere struggling pygmies. Maybe one day we can be as good as you demonstrate yourself to be in this book.
  • This is a good history of programming and programmers. I have read much of the historical material before in other books but this book manages to present new material in every chapter. This book seems to be targeted for the non-programmer or maybe someone who works with programmers and wants to figure out why they do things the way they do.

Vogue® Knitting The Ultimate Knitting Book Completely Revised Updated Vogue Knitting Magazine 9781942021698 Books Reviews

  • This is, by far, the most comprehensive knitting skill building book I have ever seen. I am a knitting instructor who has been knitting for 30 years and I knit at an expert level and I design my own sweaters. I own approximately 300 knitting books and I have purchased just about every skill building book out there, including the predecessor to this one. The improvements that have been made in this edition are significant and are worth the upgrade. This could literally be the only knitting book in your library and it will get you from beginning knitter to expert.
You will learn everything, and I mean everything you need to know to become a great knitter. This book starts with the very basics and brings you right through to expert knitting. The only thing that is not in here is "couture knitting" but that is a niche market and if you get to that point, you can buy Catherine Lowe's "Ravell'd Sleeve" online for $40. (That's another book that's worth the price if you get to that level).
Here is the layout of this hard-cover coffee table sized book's color coded chapters ( there are extensive well done diagrams and photos in every chapter)
    1. Yarns and Supplies - Explanation of types of yarns including definitions of fibers, yarn twist/structure, weights, gauge, needle size, an ounces vs weights table and care of the yarn. 10 pages elucidating the various styles of needles, best uses for each kind, and knitting and crochet needle size chart and many photos and explanations of all of the other gadgets and tools needed in knitting.
    2. Basic Techniques The Structure of Knitting (shows clear examples of what a knit stitch looks like and what a purl stitch looks like - very important basic skill needed so that you can "read" your knitting. Holding Yarn and Needles, Casting On, The Basic Knit stitch, Basic Stitch Patterns, Joining Yarns, Increases, Decreases, Binding Off. This is all in 37 pages of nice diagrams with explanations. There are some additions from the previous version of this book.
    3. Cables Introduction to Cables, Types of Cables, Understanding Cable Symbols, Reading Cable Charts, Cable Stitches and Symbols, Cabling Without a Cable Needle ( which is probably my all-time favorite technique and an absolute time saver if you are making cables).
    4. Color Knitting Stranding Knitting (ie. fair isle and the like - there are examples of the many kinds of stranded knitting) Intarsia, Bobbins, Charts, Horizontal Stripes , Vertical Stripes, Slip Stitches, Mosaic Knitting, Short-Row Color Knitting, Plaid Knitting. (I am in a fair isle group on Facebook and there are many people who are new to stranded knitting who have many questions that can easily be answered in this chapter).
    5. Lace; Introduction to Lace, Yarn Overs, Decreases, Reading Lace Charts, Shaping in Lace, Lace Borders and Edgings, Blocking Lace, Correcting Mistakes in Lace Knitting
    6. Circular Knitting Knitting in the Round, Circular Needles, Double - Pointed Needles, Two Circular Needles, Magic Loop, Jogless Join ( how to make color changes in the round without a "jog" in the color), Steeking, Moebius Knitting
    7. Directional Knitting Entrelac, How to Knit Entrelac in the Round, Modular Knitting, Bias Knitting, Center-Out Knitting, Center-Out Squares, Center-Out Circles, Center-Out Geometric Shapes, Center-Out Stars
    8. Advanced Techniques Brioche Knitting, Double Knitting, Tucks, Loop Stitch, Elongated and Drop Stitches, Felting
    9. Understanding Instructions Understanding Garment Knitting Instructions, Schematics, Gauge, Gauge Swatch for Knitting in the Round, Counting Rows, Knitting Abbreviations Explained, Crochet Abbreviations Explained, knitting Terminology, Symbols, Unusual and Alternative Symbols
    10. Correcting Errors
    11. Finishing Introduction to Blocking, Blocking Materials, Blocking, Seaming, Grafting or Kitchener Stitch, Picking Up Stitches, sewing in a Sleeve, Attaching Separate Pieces and Hemming
    12. Designing Sweaters 73 pages in this chapter because you need this kind of comprehensive material Introduction to Designing Sweaters, The Conceptual Process, Planning Yarn Amounts, Body Measurements, Using the Vogue Knitting Design Worksheet, Vogue Knitting Design Worksheet, Ribbing, Body Shaping, Armhole Shaping, Raglan Armhole Shaping, Neck and Shoulder Shaping, Sleeve Shaping, Set-In Cap Shaping, Raglan Cap Shaping, Cardigan Shaping, Dart Shaping, Short Row Shaping, Circular Design, Selvages, Neckbands, Collars, Plackets, Buttonholes, Bands Borders and Edges, Crochet Edges, Hems, Patch Pockets, Inset Pockets, Pleats and Tucks, Gathers Ruching and Flares, Finishing Touches, Shoulder Pads, Using Elastic, Buttons, Zippers, Linings
    13. Designing Shawls Introduction to Shawls, Designing Shawls, Square and Rectangular Shawls, Shetland Construction, Triangular Shawls, Circular and Half-Circular Shawls, Crescent and Short-Row Shaped Shawls, Faroese Shawl Construction, Nupps and Beads, Ruanas
    14. Designing Accessories Caps and Hats, Anatomy of a Hat, Types f Hats, Designing Hats (including schematics for measuring head), Blocking Hats, Mittens and Gloves, Anatomy of Mittens and Gloves, Measuring the Hand for Mittens and Gloves, Making Fingerless Gloves and Mittens, Mittens, Gloves, Socks and Stockings, Anatomy of a Sock, Designing Socks, Cuff-Down Socks, Toe-Up Socks, Toes and Heels, Knitting Knee-High and Over the Knee Socks, blocking and caring for Socks
    15. Embellishments Embroidery, Knitting With Beads, Knitting With Sequins, Additions
**I bought this book at a pre-release price of $27. I would be willing to pay $40 for it all day long. I am not benefiting from providing this review, I just believe strongly in sharing my knitting skills with other knitters and I feel strongly that this is the absolute best knitting reference I've ever seen
  • It is indeed greatly expanded and updated. I own the 2002 edition and have used it quite a bit as a reference book. This book is larger, making the many illustrations and diagrams easy to see. The page numbers have returned to the outside of the page. The 2002 book was laid out differently.
I like the sections on design, modular knitting, and lace blocking the most. I have a lot to learn from them. I am a little disappointed in some of the very general instructions, such as the short paragraph given to creating vertical buttonholes. On the other hand, I appreciate the detailed treatment of doing intarsia.

I was disappointed to see that the moebius section and how-to did not include the moebius cast-on, but just said to twist your piece or twist a circular cast-on when joining. Section 12 has many completely dark-blue swatches that make stitch definition hard to see. Dark blue is also used as the base piece when illustrating a lighter border or band. That's not so bad. Some of the knitting on the sample pieces could have had more regular stitches or better blocking. I mean -- they're supposed to be samples in an ultimate knitting book! I found a few typos such as the perplexing "CATHCHING" in one header.

Overall, I think it's worth acquiring, even if you own previous editions.
  • I had the original version of this book and absolutely loved it. When I heard that there was a revised edition, I decided to part with the old one and upgrade. I am not disappointed. If you only have one knitting book, this is the one to have. It goes into so much detail on literally any topic that you need. The instructions are very clear and easy to understand. The pictures are excellent. This is definitely the gold standard of knitting instruction, no matter what your level.
  • If someone were to request a book recommendation for a knitting book that spans technique, method, and skill level, this is the one. It is well illustrated and comprehensive. Buy it for the new knitter and they will not outgrow it. Buy it for the veteran and they will likely find continued support for growth. Highly recommended.
  • A knitter for fifty years, I am enjoying the latest knitting renaissance fostered by young designers and the wealth of beautiful new yarns. Vogue Knitting is the kind of reference book everyone needs—new knitters will learn from the clear drawings, designers will welcome the exhaustive discussion of choices for each part of a work, and knitters like me will find new inspiration in its inclusion of up to the minute methods. It is a pleasure to look at and to read, and I will reach for it often as I knit.
  • What a book!!! What writing, and patterns, and fantastic descriptions. I cannot say enough good things about Vogue Knitting. It was worth the wait. I am an intermediate knitter and I have very little patience for easy instructions. I like the challenge of new techniques, new ideas and inspirations and this book has it all. I would give it 100 stars if I could. I hope that the next buyer enjoy it as much as I do. Thank you Vogue.
  • This is a must have for every knitter of every skill level. WOW, WOW, WOW. It's a fantastic one-stop-shopping resource for everything from yarns, tools and techniques to even garment design. It covers SO much. I'm thrilled!

100 Deadly Skills Survival Edition The SEAL Operative Guide to Surviving in the Wild and Being Prepared for Any Disaster Clint Emerson 9781501143908 Books Reviews

  • This book has some problems. The first problem is the title; it makes it sound like this is an extension of the first book. It's not. This is a book that provides tips about how to survive in various types of wilderness, natural disasters, or man made disasters (including active shooter situations), along with overly repetitive info on how to make a Go Bag.

Second problem is that some off the information in here is simply wrong. I'm hoping that's the result of a bad editor/ghostwriter rather than the author being this wrong.

Examples Pg. 50, cold weather survival; yes, alcohol does cause vasodilation which leads to increased heat loss. But caffeine and tobacco cause vaso-constriction, which can contribute to frostbite. Yes, both are bad in cold weather, but stating wrong info dilutes ones trust in the res of the info provided.

Pg. 94, desalinating sea water; minor but important point is missing - remove the tin can before trying to drink the water.

Pg. 116, choice of shotgun ammo; this is a major problem and so wrong it could cost lives. Contrary to what's written, buckshot WILL penetrate multiple interior walls. Worse, again contrary to what's written, the pattern size from a shotgun is roughly 1" per yard of distance from the target. So at 3-6 yards that you'd see inside a home, that's a maximum of a 2" pattern, which means you DO have to aim. Did Joe Biden write this section?

Elsewhere there are a couple references to saying NOT to use Goretex because it's not breathable. Well, Goretex is breathable. So the question is, did the author mean don't use Goretex BECAUSE it's breathable (and thus, unlike vapor barrier clothing, will make you colder), or did he mean you SHOULD use Goretex because it's breathable?

Those are the major problems I've found so far. The rest of the book is ok I guess, but for people who've already trained in wilderness medicine, advanced first aid, or have backpacked/camped a lot, this book has less to offer.
  • I got this as a bit of a gag gift. I read it while winter camping and ended up finishing the entire book in long night. Emerson blends functionality, humor, and a bit of unpredictability into what ends up being a pretty good book. I like his teaching method and will be using the book as a reference to teach a nine year old basic survival skills. I will wait till the boy is a little older before we cover the chapter on how to hide a body.
  • This book is a continuation of his first book, 100 Deadly Skills, which I also read. Clint is a BTDT type from the SOF community as a SEAL of note, so his advice not typical mall ninja nonsense you'll often find out there.

Both books supply easy to read concise advice on surviving a wide variety of possible threats and make for excellent reference guides on the topic. Sort of cliff notes for how not to die from a wide range of potential threats.

The first focused on some tricks of the trade for all manner of threats and strategies more common to people who go into harms way for a living, and the second contains advice on threats more common to a larger audience and civilians, such as fires, natural disasters, home invaders, etc. I prefer the first book personally, but that's due to the fact I enjoy learning about spy craft and how high level people working in difficult and dangerous situations survive.

The first more fun to read, the second more applicable to a large audience and most civilian types, although civilian types will pick up some excellent tips from the first book too.

Either a worthy read, both worth reading in our modern world.
  • Excellent book full of great details anyone can use to prepare for the worst, should it happen. I really enjoy trying many of the skills, within reason, pointed out in the book. Practiced the navigation tips as well. I will tell you practice makes perfect. It's just fun to do.
  • This is an entertaining book. Offers a lot of resourceful information and some unique methods of survival. I have learned quite a bit from the book. Granted, I do not think I will use much of it, I do not think I will find myself stranded in a desert for example. But, the knowledge is great, it provides perspective, and also, you have to figure, anything is possible.
  • If you have family & friends who don't exactly embrace Being Prepared, then consider this the a book that is written in a way that they can consume quickly & easily. Easy to pick up, but hard to put down.
  • This is a fun book. I got it for my husband. It even has details for how to deal with someone coming into your house (intruder), and surviving bear or shark attacks. Also includes things like avalanches and what kind of emergency things to carry in your car. A very visual book with illustrations on every single page. Very cool pocket guide. Really quick, applicable tips.
  • Good basic information. Does not dive in to complex info. I would recommend this to any one learning or a quick over view for more advance survivalist. Because we some times teach others but forget to keep it simple.

Kind Is the New Classy The Power of Living Graciously eBook Candace Cameron Bure Ami McConnell Reviews

  • I grew up watching Full House and loved that show! I didn't care if the episode airing on TV was a repeat; I watched it because that show was amazing! In case you aren't already aware, Candace Cameron Bure played the character Donna Jo (DJ) Tanner, the eldest of the Tanner sisters. I knew that, in addition to starring in the show Fuller House, she had also written some books but I knew nothing about them. Then I saw this new book. Kindness has always been something that's close to my heart and I've been working on it even more this year! I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book so I ordered the hardcover copy since I have a friend who likes to read the same books as I do and I often lend her my books. Plus I had a feeling this book wouldn't be just a one-time read!

Kind is the New Classy is a Christian-based inspirational book written by Candace Cameron Bure, who is very strong in her faith and someone we can all learn from! This book is about more than just being nice to people and moving along with your day. Kindness is a lifestyle choice, one that has many benefits to everyone involved when used to its full extent. Kindness isn't only about being kind to others; it's also about being kind to yourself and once you do that, showing kindness will come more naturally to you.

In this book, Candace teaches us what kindness looks like and the many ways you can extend kindness to others as well as yourself. She includes many anecdotes about the ways she has shown kindness and how she's learned from her life experiences. She includes many stories of her time on Full House, Fuller House, and The View and I feel that we really get to know her as a person, not just a celebrity. When she tells these stories, she includes many Scripture references and it's evident she's extremely strong in her faith.

This book is 266 pages long and is divided into ten chapters and also includes two appendices. It's categorized as a biography/autobiography book and I'd like to add that it's very much a religious and inspirational book as well. There are many, many times when Candace talks about God and includes Scripture and I loved this. It's such a breath of fresh air when you discover a celebrity who is so strong in their faith and true to themselves no matter what.

Words cannot describe how much I LOVE this book! I cried during several parts of it because it's clearly written from the heart and I could feel my emotions stirring many times while I read it. I've learned a lot from Candace and I want to re-read this book again and again so I can learn even more about a topic that I'm so passionate about! I've already recommended it to others and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how the power of kindness can affect everyone's lives. Buy this book for yourself. Buy it for a friend. I don't buy as many books as I used to since I borrow many from the library and many books I only read one time but this book was worth every penny I spent and then some! I've already ordered another one of Candace's books and want to read everything she's written. I admire her for her courage to stay true to herself and for writing such an amazing and powerful book!
  • I know it is difficult for some people to get comfortable with Christian enthusiasm. That being said, there is a wonderful message in this book about women treating one another with grace and kindness. Jesus taught people to treat one another this way. Even if you don't believe Jesus is the son of God, it is a wonderful way to approach life. Wouldn't we all be much happier living this way rather than feeling anger and frustration. You do not need to be a Christian to embrace this message. Thank you Mrs. Bure for sharing you're perspective during such difficult times. This is a wonderfully, upbeat and thought provoking book.
  • I feel bad leaving only 2 stars. I wanted to love this book just because of all the praise it was getting. I read a lot of Beth Moore books and was hopeful that this book would be similar. I will say that the first few chapters are great and it was a page turner for a bit. But somewhere in the middle it lost me. It bounces all over the place and doesn't have a nice flow to it. This is more of like an autobiography. Now I'm not saying that's a bad thing.. but the title us somewhat misleading. Instead of the front cover saying "The Power of Living Graciously" it should say "How Canadace Cameron Bure Lives Graciously." As this book was more of her talking about how nice she is.
  • I am not one to read anything by Hollywood celebrities. Normally I have no interest in celebrities and how out of touch with the real reality of middle class America they are. However, for some reason I purchased and downloaded this book and was not disappointed. Kind is the New Classy The Power of Living Graciously is an excellent read! Candace is spot on about how being kind and gracious changes everything. This is a very basic act that has been lost in the social media frenzy. I know we ALL fail at this sometimes, but it's hard to "see" that you are a Christian (speaking of those who are, myself included), when you treat people with rudeness, unthankfulness, ungratefulness, etc. It breaks my heart (literally), it crushes me to see this over and over again, especially with those close to you. God's Word is very clear on how we treat people, no matter what you think about them. If Christ truly lives inside you and you claim to love Him, then you will love others just the same as He loves! So thank you Candace Cameron Bure for this refresher on the lost act of being kind and gracious!! I highly recommend this book and plan on reading it again. Romans 129 starts out so perfectly....Let love be genuine, verse 10 states - with brotherly affection. You can't do that without the Holy Spirit!
  • Wasn't sure if I would like this book, can't stand preachy ones or those who imply they are perfect. But with so much anger, rage, social media bullying, and CLASSLESS people, today I thought I'd give it a read. Not for influencing others but to find a calm and peace in myself AND I LOVE IT. Candace does NOT preach and odes NOT imply she's perfect in fact she shares finding her grace by sharing HER LEARNING EXPERIENCES. As we grow and age we should never stop learning. Part of that is to see behaviors and characteristics in others that WE DO NO LIKE and also to see behaviors and characteristics in others that we do like. Recognizing both we can examine ourselves and work to banish the behaviors we don't like and integrate the ones we do like into ourselves by understanding why we like them and how to feel them and change to better ourselves. THIS BOOK helps do that by the way the author shares her growth and experiences. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AS A SELF AWAKENING READ.
  • A must buy! A great book for women. Candace offers a great insight on living in today world. I have practiced some of the tips and tricks mentioned in her book. Guess what? They work! I felt as if she personally wrote the book for me. Give it a try!

Lord of the Privateers The Adventurers Quartet Book 4 edition by Stephanie Laurens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • This is a pretty good book. The main characters are fully developed and the interaction between the H/h is believable - even the reason for the estrangement.
I read the 1st book (so-so), then I borrowed the other 2 from the library. But I decided to give this one a try. And I am glad I did.

Stephanie Laurens CAN write and she was definitely on her game with this book. It is the best I have read from her in quite a while.

So, why 4 stars instead of 5? There was way-y-y-y too much detail about the rescue and too many characters. They became so confusing that I did not even try to tell them apart. The rescue scene was well thought out (not like that Black Cobra mess).

Another pro for me was the really well written (and SHORT) love scenes. She managed to restrain herself and NOT write 20 page love scenes as usual. Twenty pages is on interesting if you are one of the participants!
  • I really like Stephanie Laurens, ever since I first picked up Devil's Bride, and generally will preorder anything new that I can afford, just on the strength of her writing skill. (Frankly, she's one of only half a dozen authors whom I WILL preorder, I've been burned by several others, and mostly don't trust the concept.) But, not Laurens. She never disappoints.
In this case, she builds to a stunning four-book climax, with a few twists that I didn't expect. And she does it so Gracefully, it's like watching a professional dancer.
  • Evidently this was the wrap up for this 4-book series; but since there's a Kit Frobisher who caught the bouquet, I'm guessing wie'll hear more about this family in the future. For those of you who love pages upon pages of angst--should I trust him or shouldn't I trust him, etc, etc, etc--which in my opinion was about 1/3 of the book--and pages and pages of sex play, this book is definitely for you. I just wanted them to cut to the chase and solve the "problem". I didn't find this book as engaging as the first 3, but had to see who the bad guys turned out to be. Turned out to be a bit of a disappointment if you want to know the truth--predicatable. I've read most of Lauren's books even though she's never met an adjective she didn't like, and preferrably in multiples. I've enjoyed most of her books, but have learned to just skim certain parts that have become faiirly predicatble. If you're an avid fan, you probably won't be quite as picky as I've been.
  • Lord of the Privateers was a thrilling ending to this 4 part series. All of which can be read as standalones but with Stephanie Laurens as the author why would anyone want to. Royd has a mission to accomplish at the request of the crown to rescue hostages in Africa while solving the puzzle of who is behind the scheme. While Isobel has a mission of her own for her family; the disappearance of a cousin in Africa. An "out of nowhere" secret is revealed early on that puts our hero and heroine on the path to reconnecting on a personal level while performing the rescue solving the mystery.

To me this was the best of the series. I have been a fan of Stephanie Laurens since "Captain Jack" in 1997 and scooped up "Devil's Bride" the first day of it's release in 1998. When reading "Lord of the Privateers" it became obvious as to why I truly love, and anticipate, each and every novel Stephanie Laurens writes, her use of language. How she describes a scene, whether it be a swashbuckling fight, a journey over land/sea or her sensual love scenes takes you right there in the moment. Not many authors have the ability to actually bring the reader to the point that they can smell the salty sea air, feel the breeze and see the wind whipping through the sails. This is what brings her fans back each and every time. If someone is reading this review who has never read a Stephanie Laurens novel before, don't hesitate please pick a novel, any novel and join the journey.
  • 4 stars

What a great end to the series, it perfectly wrapped up the ongoing story and still provided a truly touching love story.

Royd (really unfortunate name) and Isobel have a past, eight years ago they were madly in love and handfasted. They spent 3 weeks together when Royd was called away on a mission. A mission he said would only be a couple of weeks, a month at most. He ended up being gone for over a year with no word whatsoever to Isobel. When he returned, she refused to see him and their relationship ended.

Years later, they began a working relationship, but they never discussed their shared past (which honestly I found unbelievable) and neither has married.

Now 8 years later, Isobel comes to Royd and demands that he take her to Freetown, she has gotten word that her cousin Katherine (aka Kate) is missing and she needs to go there and find her. This works for Royd because he has been tasked with rescuing the captives (which Kate is one of). He has also decided that it is time for he and Isobel to settle the past. He knows what outcome he wants and hopes to convince Isobel that she belongs with him.

The first day of their journey, a huge secret that Isobel has been keeping comes to light and the truth about their separation is finally confessed. They decide together that they both made mistakes and that the feelings they once had are still there and agree to explore the possibility of a future together - but first, they must rescue the captives, catch the bad guys and shut down the mine.

The first stop is London, where they hook up with Royd's brothers and their ladies. They plot and plan and then set off to Freetown.

Once there, they enact their plan and are partially successful - they have rescued the captives and shut down the mine, but they only have captured 2 of the 6 backers for the mine.

They return to England and plot some more and come up with another plan to draw out the remaining bad guys.

The story was well told and flows nicely, it is a bit steamier than the other books in the series (no complaints from me), has a lot of action, a few twists and turns and finally closure to the ongoing storyline as well as a hard earned HEA.

The reason for only 4 stars? The book is a bit wordy and even though everyone seemed to accept, forgive and understand Isobel's reasons for keeping her secret - I could not, what she did was pretty much unforgivable in my eyes.

I would definitely recommend reading this series in order, because, I would not recommend this as a stand alone title.
