5000 WRITING PROMPTS A Master List of Plot Ideas Creative Exercises and More eBook Bryn Donovan Reviews

  • There are some times as a writer when the exact thing I need is to borrow someone else's brain for a second to see things from a new angle or add an outside take to a plot or a scene that I never would have come up with on my own. I often talk through my books with my writing group, but when they're not available, this book is the closest thing I can get to that experience.

Bryn's brain, and as a consequence, this book, is packed full of story sparks and prompts to set your writer's mind off in new directions. There are prompts to help you begin a story. There are prompts by genre (fantasy, sci-fi, horror, mystery, romance, YA, historical fiction, general fiction) as well as prompts to spark ideas for characters, setting, and dialogue.
As an author who often writes retellings, I particularly loved the section with plots from European fairytales and mythology, Shakespeare and classic cinema. The prompts based on the senses were another a favorite of mine.

And lest you think this book is only for fiction writers, Bryn also includes a substantial section with prompts for poetry, blogging, and autobiographical stories.
I'm so glad to have this resource on my and carry with me always.
  • Every writer should have a huge book of writing prompts within easy reach, and this book delivers. The best part about this book is that the prompts aren't just recycled, half-baked ideas that you can find by doing a Google search on writing prompts. The reason I did not give 5 stars is because, number one all of the prompts are numbered individually per section - it would have been helpful to have a running list for purchasers who want to "pick a number out of a hat" (or use an online random number generator). Secondly, the book says that it has creative writing exercises and plot ideas. However, the book only has poetry writing exercises. And, the "plot" ideas are embedded in the prompts (not actual plot ideas). So I found that the sub-title of the book is slightly misleading. To reiterate, this book only has writing prompts with about 100 or so poetry writing exercises. Nothing else.
  • I am absolutely blown away by this book. I had recently roughed out a book that I'm preparing to write as a prequel to my trilogy, but I couldn't figure out the right opening scene. The very first section of this book proposes 50 opening scenes. By the time I had gotten through the first 5, I already knew more about the roles of my main characters, and by the time I got through all 50, I had not only found more exciting openers than I could possibly use, but I had fleshed out scenes throughout the whole book. When I went on to fiction plots by genre, my jaw dropped. I have enough material here to keep me writing novels for the rest of my life. Highly recommend!
  • I cannot describe how much I love this book! It's loaded with amazing prompts and ideas. Honestly, if you run out of something to write about, it's only because you stopped looking through the book lol... it's THAT loaded! There's ideas and prompts for just about anything you can imagine, and you can get even more ideas and prompts just by changing up the ones in the books to include this or that or the other... it's just an overall fantastic resource. I'd give it a 10 star rating if I could! I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs ideas on what to write about. A perfect resource!
  • This is an excellent resource. I was tired of typing "writing prompts" into the search bar on Pinterest and getting the same results, or just the plain wrong things. Within the first section (I hadn't even reached my genre yet!), I had three new ideas, and several ways to get unstuck in some projects I had put to the side. If you're a teacher, you'll definitely want to pick this book up for your classroom. So many ideas.
  • This was an excellent purchase. There are many varied and simple prompts in this book. Just little what ifs to get your brain going. took some time to look over some while I was sitting in the car today and got five plot solid plot ideas from just one, single section.

Because the prompts are so simple, it leaves your brain to just fill in all the missing info. Next time I have writer's block I'm going to pick a section, load up a random number generator and see what happens. Great purchase, very useful.
  • I love this book ! As an educator and owner of a small educational consultant firm/ tutoring company, this product is great for all ages.
The writing prompts are fun and encourage experienced and inexperienced writers to sharpen their writing skills!! Two thumbs up!! Kristie Smith- owner of Efucational Solutions
  • I'm not really into most writing books because I don't like to think that I need help getting ideas. But wow, this book is a gem. Donovan packs so much into this one volume. Everything from prompts to get you started to hints to get you out of plot holes. It's not a book to read cover to cover. You can just dip into the section you need and then get back to WRITING, armed with new ideas and creative workarounds. Whether you're a newbie who's working on a first novel, or if you're a seasoned professional, you'll get something out of this guide.
