The Elite Road Warrior Six Energy Habits to Master the Business Travel Life Bryan Paul Buckley 9781090347756 Books Reviews

  • First off my favorite part of the whole book is how it tells you how long it will take you to read each chapter. Man I wish every book did this! It is so helpful when you only have twenty minutes and you are particular about getting through a complete chapter before you stop. I also love the bullet points and action items at the end to help recap.

Overall it was a fantastic read. Bryan's humor is kind of like a 7th grade boy - which cracks me up and you can tell he doesn't take himself too seriously. As a female I felt like most of the stories were geared towards men with lots of sports analogies. But I also understand that the vast majority of road warriors percent wise is men - so I get it.

The concepts overall are basic - things we all should know and should be doing but years on the road kind of saps the "know how's" out of your brain and in seeps the "easy way out". This is a great reminder of the ways you can CHOOSE to win on the road. If you implement these strategies in the book you will kill it in every area of your life.

Quick and easy read that any business traveler would find entertaining and helpful. 5 stars from me.
  • If you travel for a living, The Elite Road Warrior is your way back to health, higher levels of energy and productivity.

I found this book to be an easy read. It's presented in steps to guide the road weary traveler to incrementally improve their health, relationships with their family and up their work game while taking on the challenges of living on the road.

There's simple, effective, realistic guidance in every chapter. I really liked how each section tells you how long it will take to read, which is pretty smart, so even the busiest traveler can read gauge how much time they have to read in between airports, meetings and client events.

After reading this book I realize there really are No More Excuses to not become an Elite Road Warrior. Read this book and start implementing today. Your health, your family and your career will thank you.
  • Loved the book. As a frequent traveler who does not fare well on the road, Bryan provided me with some great suggestions for both physical and mental principles to being more healthy on the road.

My favorite suggestion is to “stay moving” throughout the day, and not wait for a workout that may never happen. Take the stairs, take walks, and take mental breaks on a regular basis so that you can bank benefits incrementally.

I’m at a conference as I write this. I’m a big guy (6’2” 290 lbs) who’s recovering from 2 Achilles surgeries and looking to right-size. Yesterday, following the books suggestion, I climbed the stairs of my 8-story hotel 9 times throughout the day for a total of 72 stairs and 1,100 calories burned (at my weight). Combining that with his suggestions for healthy eating and drinking lots of water, I feel like I had a chance to put the books principles to work fairly quickly.

All of us know that the key to success will be to continue this beyond the first week, and Bryan has some good suggestions for that as well. Thanks Bryan, and 5-stars from me.
  • Bryan Buckley has definitely "been there". HIs thoughts and ideas regarding how to be your best while traveling is inspiring, doable, and it works! I have been a road warrior for 39 years and I can honestly say, with all of the experience I have, both good and not so good, that if you follow Brian's lead you will be amazed at the results. Now YOU can be the one with the energy, stamina, and attitude to have your "best trip" every time, not losing touch with those you care most about, and arrive home feeling good physically and mentally, and not miss a beat.
  • I spent 80 of 100 days on the road at the end of 2018 and connect deeply with the challenges and solutions Bryan Buckley discusses in The Elite Road Warrior. But truth be told, being in the office when not traveling can be just as exhausting. Either way, this book will benefit the high performer.

Be warned you will not be able to casually skim this book without feeling compelled to act.

Bryan makes implementation easy and practical. You won’t be overwhelmed with things that you could never do. And that’s what I appreciate most about The Elite Road Warrior anybody can quickly improve their energy levels simply by focusing on their energy habits each and every day, whether at home or on the road.
  • As someone who flies 100 or more flights a year, I know the stress of travel and how the ‘fun’ begins to wear on you. Bryan ‘s ideas are well thought out and extremely helpful, and he backs them up with fun quotes and statistics. Taking care of yourself doesn’t need to be hard, no matter how much you travel, and the easy to follow checklists and strategies in this book are presented in a fun and easy to follow manner. These ideas relevant for the most casual or hardened business traveler. Take the ideas in this book seriously and your life will be better for it.

One thing I would like to see discussed is meditation - it has been extremely transformative for me and would be a great addition to anyone’s routine at home or on the road.
  • Bryan Paul Buckley gives advice, tips, and a plan you can use to stay fit, connected, and mentally on track if you spend time on the road. When I spend time traveling, it gets difficult to keep my fitness and family ahead of travel. Bryan has been there and shares his wisdom so we can all be warriors on the road. If you spend time traveling for business, this book is for you.
  • This book is a wealth of actionable ideas to help you show up as your best self, both for your clients and for your loved ones. There are clear and detailed strategies to sustain positive physical and mental energy.
While it is written specifically for the travelers, these same ideas can help anyone facing overwhelm, such as Caregivers!
    It's definitely worth a read.

Game of Thrones 2019 Wall Calendar HBO 9780789334954 Books Reviews

  • This calendar is made very well. I am really impressed with the quality being as though this calendar was under $10.

The packaging I was not impressed with due to it just being thrown into a box but there was not any damage done so no stars removed because I’d that.

The calendar is a thicker quality paper so it does look great displayed on the wall.

I will buy my calendar from this seller next year.
  • I like the photos, though I wish they could have put Cersei in since she’s an important character
  • This is visual reminder to me that new episodes of "Game of Thrones" begin April 2019. Highly addictive entertainment. You do not have to dumb down your expectations of quality cable television programming. Writer George R.R. Martin's vision reminds us of the catastrophe vindictive political leaders unleash on their own citizens. The Whitewalker pictured on the cover of the calendar has inspired marketing of Whitewalker scotch; Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
  • Happy costumer. What a great calendar. I really like that the character from every month has his/her sigil in the background of the calendar, as you can see the wolf for Arya in the picture I shared.
Buy it, you won't regret it.
  • For true fans of Game of Thrones, this calendar is a must have. Each month has a picture of one of the characters and reminds you of a time you saw them in the show. Great gift.
  • A must have for GOT fans, I love this calendar. Nice pictures, easy to read, I have it on the wall above my desk, 3 feet away and can read it well. Has standard U.S. holidays on it and each calendar month has a water mark art in the background as well.
  • I ordered in a hurry when it was on a deep discount. My fault for not looking at the preview. I figured there was tons of epic and beautiful imagery to pull from for a GoT calendar. Instead I have a sassy picture of Littlefinger staring at me for the month of April. Every month is pretty much a dull character photo.
  • Each month is a photo from the HBO show, "Game of Thrones." Iit doesn't include any of the beautiful artwork done for George R.R. Martin's book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire." They're all set photos from the show.

Exploring Arduino Tools and Techniques for Engineering Wizardry Jeremy Blum Books Reviews

  • I’m coming to review this book rather late. It was published in late 2013, I believe, but I’ve only recently purchased it and wanted to pipe up with my two cents’ worth. As many people would probably say, I originally encountered the works of Jeremy Blum on YouTube. I bought my first Arduino board in late 2013. Being a busy professional and father, I didn’t have a whole lot of time to play around with it.. But I can’t really learn new things in a vacuum, so I quickly developed a project to use my first board on a timing track for my son’s Boxwood Derby car. (He had a brief interest in the Cub Scouts, which has long since waned.) So searching the Intertubes for training materials on the Arduino was natural. I looked at many of them, but by far the best, at least in my opinion, were the short videos produced on the topic by Jeremy Blum with the support of the electronics supply company Element 14.

Jeremy Blum is the host of a series of 15 tutorials for working with Arduinos, sponsored by Element 14. I used those Arduino Tutorial videos to bring myself up to speed quickly.I actually managed to get a timing circuit built in time for my son to enter his car in an elementary school science fair. True, we only re-proved what Galileo figured out in 1638, but still, it’s always nice to see that the laws of physics haven’t changed. I was very grateful to Mr. Blum for his guidance. At the time, I remember being astonished that such clear, cleanly explained training films existed for the Arduino and that they had been created by an undergraduate student! When he announced that he was writing a book, I sort of felt like I owed it to him to buy and read it. (Plus, he had helped to get me hooked on this whole open-source hardware maker movement, so I was naturally curious to learn more.)

To summarize my perspective on the book, I’m a working IT professional who had introductory practical electronics courses as a physics student nearly 30 years ago, so many of the concepts here aren’t new to me. I’ve played around with small circuits on my own for many years, but I was never really a hobbyist, more of a dabbler. But with the arrival of the Arduino and the Raspbery Pi, I finally had the opportunity to try out working with microcontrollers. I had always been a bit too busy and perhaps slightly intimidated to take that particular plunge. I think maybe that’s Jeremy’s best trait, he makes you unafraid to try out new things. The other thing I should mention here is that I've worked as a technical writer for many years, so I'm aware of the technical aspects of putting together this kind of hardware/software instructional book. It's a unique kind of challenge to write about both technical hardware and software in a combined work.

So, the book . . . I bought the paperback on during a month in which Mr. Blum turned out to be donating his profits to young fremale engineers. I can certainly get behind that cause and I’m glad it worked out that way. The book, printed by Wiley is nicely printed. I like the texture and design of the cover. The pages are fairly standard for technology/programming books, black and white on a medium-light weight, matte stock. The layout of chapters are clean and crisp; the typography clear and legible and the illustrations printed well in grayscale. The illustrations are basically an even mixture of screen grabs of the Arduino IDE interface, what looks to be Mac OS X operating system windows and elements, circuit diagrams done in Fritzing, a few photos likely taken by the author, and a few black and white line drawings of key concepts.

The structure follows the YouTube tutorial videos pretty closely, introducing elementary engineering principles first and then moving on to the basics of how a microcontroller works, the practical capabilities of an Arduino, and then simple and more complex projects created using one. Usually, the author sticks with the Arduino Uno, but he does acknowledge and occasionally even suggest projects for the other models. He starts each chapter calling out the digital resources available related to the material in the chapter, which is nice. He naturally links back to his tutorial videos, but he isn’t shy pointing to other valuable online resources. All of the sketches, diagrams and schematic files he uses are available on a custom website supporting the book. (www.exploringarduino.com)

Each chapter goes farther, obviously, than he could in an 8 to 15 minutes web video. I found the extra content illuminating if not terribly exciting. Many of the suggested projects are pretty elementary, but then the goal is to slowly guide a student new to electronics into the topics without scaring them. That, I have to say, is the true gift of this book and of Jeremy Blum’s technique in general. He seems truly skilled at introducing concepts that could be very daunting and making them seem clear and even friendly, in a way.

Actually, I want to avoid giving faint praise to this book. I found it quite wonderful. It really is only a book about the Arduino in the same way that ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ is about motorcycle maintenance. The subject is a means to an end. The end, I would venture to say, is to train young, eager people to become engineers in both mind and spirit; maybe not even to become professionals, but to become imbued with that sense of curiosity and intellectual audacity that generates the most astonishing innovations in human culture. It doesn’t just walk you through, step-by-step, on how to interface your Arduino with a motor, for example. It uses this as an opportunity to provide an astonishingly clear explanation of what transistors do and how to avoid being intimidated by them. The number of topics he just gradually sidles up to and introduces to the reader is quite charming and amazing at the same time. This is a book on how to think like a maker. Not a “Maker” but rather simply a maker-of-things . . it describes how to be a true engineer, like the Wright Brothers or Archimedes; someone who takes what’s in the world and uses it in interesting and novel ways. The electronics of sound, coding, serial and parallel communications, wireless communications, the key details of devices connected on the Internet, data logging, hardware and software interrupts, dealing with high and low power environments, dealing with servos and pulse-width-modulation, it’s all described in the authors consistently concise, clear, and complete prose.

That completeness is quite nice, especially for someone learning the techniques. He doesn’t really assume anything about what the reader knows. He goes out of his way to make sure that every loose end of a project is described in plain ways. What is the difference between a pull-up and pull-down resistor? Why would one want to use polling when interrupts are available? What are the limits of the power supplies you will encounter? This is all useful, practical stuff that many books for beginners either ignore or bury in lots of scary detail.

I suspect that Mr. Blum is going to spend many years updating this book. It’s perfect for teaching young engineers or scientists the basics of practical electronics. When studying as an undergrad physics student, you are required to take a course in basic electronics, because most of your experimental work means that you need to design circuits, from simple to robust and complex measurement circuits. This book is a perfect way to introduce these concepts. But being based on the Arduino, a very young technology, means that he’s going to need to update this book every few years to avoid it from going out of date. But it’s so well organized that I suspect updates will be straightforward. And it cries out for the creation of an interactive e-book version, if one isn’t already in the works. I tend to keep an eye on what the author is doing with this and other projects on his personal website, first because I often refer back to his materials and blog posts, but also because I find his ethical take on sharing with younger engineers (and other topics) to be heartening.

The only criticisms I have of the book are related to the illustrations. There are several places where elements of illustrations, particularly Fritzing circuit diagrams, are called out by color. I understand that the ebook version includes the diagrams in color, but the printed book emphatically does not. It only happens a few times, but when it does, it can cause some consternation. The other problem I only occasionally had with the illustrations was the size of the text in some screen captures. Getting that consistently correct across a full book can be quite challenging as you pull images from multiple sources. Still, most of the pictures are clean and clear, and the color illustrations could be redesigned slightly in gray scale with callouts emphasizing items from the text.

Overall, if you can't guess, I really liked this book. When my sons get a bit older, I will encourage them to read it if they show even the slightest interest in the arcane ways of engineers. This is the kind of book that will teach a young mind not to fear the engineering wizards, but to emulate them. And the world needs all of the engineering wizards it can find these days.
  • Jeremy Blum is the best combination of a formally trained Electronics Engineer and a Maker/Hacker. His excellent video series promulgated through YouTube and Element 14 is the most complete video tutorial on the Arduino available. But, this Maker's Handbook and introductory engineering text is much more than a rehash or paper documentation for his outstanding video series. While the book could stand alone as an excellent practical introduction to the Arduino, it also serves as a clear (and as much as possible no-math) introduction to principles of electronic engineering and computer science, with a little bit of practical physics thrown in. As an easy to follow engineering textbook Jeremy's "Exploring Arduino" offers the most complete explanation of Analog to Digital Conversion, Pulse Width Modulation, USB and Serial Protocols (I2C and SPI), Data Logging and Real Time Clocking, TCP/IP and Web Protocols and the Internet of Things I have found among a plethora of Arduino books. The illustrations are of high quality black and white and sufficient to capture wiring diagrams, schematics, oscilloscope traces program listings, data sheets and parts pictorials. As a Maker's Handbook part kits are available at a discount with the book from Element 14 allowing one to economically duplicate all of Jeremy's experiments.

I highly recommend "Exploring Arduino" as much more than an introduction to this popular microcontroller. He bringhs his skills as a Maker and as an Cornell Master's Degree Electronic Engineer to the best combination of Experimental Handbook for the Arduino and a clear and easy to follow introduction to Electronic Principles.

  • I somehow ended up with both the paper version and the kindle version. I like them both but the version has the diagrams in color which is a huge win for me when trying to figure out the breadboard layouts. In the b&w of the book the greys are too hard to distinguish, but in the color version on kindle its much easier to trace the jumpers and read the resistors.

Really good book to go beyond basics with your arduino.
  • I'm about halfway through this book. Thus far, it is much more in depth than previous Arduino books but this isn't merely focused on the Arduino. This book is a great balance between electronics fundamentals and using the Arduino as a platform to re-affirm them. Thus far I've learned about using Kirchhoff's voltage law to calculate the appropriate size for resisters when building my circuits, how to read from both digital and analog sensors, how to build a voltage divider for those sensors, how to use a transistor to deliver higher power to a motor, and much more. Using his tips, my daughter and I were able to build a temperature sensor that lit led indicators and triggered a fan when the temperature was too high. We also built a mini alarm that activated a piezo alarm and lights when the motion sensor was triggered. My daughter and I are having a ball! Thus far I have found it useful to read the chapter and then watch some of the complementary videos he points to at the beginning of the chapter. Thus far, all of those videos can be located on his YouTube account as well. Overall, very good book for those rusty on basic electronics and wanting to use the Arduino to demonstrate those concepts..
  • While undoubtedly good for those already familiar with the programming language, this is not a beginners text.
The electronics schematics and explanations are good, but the "sketch" code goes completely unexplained.
My sole point with this review is that this text is not for the neophyte.

In a civilized society, violence is rarely the answer. But when it is-it's the only answer.

The sound of breaking glass downstairs in the middle of the night.

The words, "Move and you die."

The hands on your child, or the knife to your throat.

In this essential book, self-protection expert and former military intelligence officer Tim Larkin changes the way we think about violence in order to save our lives. By deconstructing our assumptions about violence-its morality, its function in modern society, how it actually works-Larkin unlocks the shackles of our own taboos and arms us with what we need to know to prevent, prepare for, and survive the unthinkable event of life-or-death violence. Through a series of harrowing true-life stories, Larkin demonstrates that violence is a tool equally effective in the hands of the "bad guy" or the "good guy"; that the person who acts first, fastest and with the full force of their body is the one who survives; and that each and every one of us is capable of being that person when our lives are at stake.

An indispensable resource, When Violence is the Answer will remain with you long after you've finished reading, as the bedrock of your self-protection skills and knowledge.

"Tim Larkin often says that violence is usually not the answer, but when it is, it is the only answer.

I’ve listened to several of his interviews, watched several of his videos, and read more than one of his books. His message is consistent. 99 percent of conflicts are what he calls “antisocial.” The schoolyard bully. The angry red neck. The drunk guy at the bar. These all can and should be avoided. Violence is not the answer to these encounters. The answer is to stay polite and walk away.

What about the other 1%? These are asocial encounters. We’ve moved beyond “monkey politics,” as Larkin calls it. There’s no communication. There’s no social posturing. There’s only a predator, and he intends to get what he wants regardless of what he has to do. Your life, or your family member’s life, is at stake. You can’t talk your way out. You can’t run. Now is when violence is the answer.

If you’ve read Larkin’s other books, you won’t find a lot that is new here A slightly different focus, maybe, but the same basic message. But if you haven’t read any of his writings, I highly recommend this one as it is the most up to date.

Another note: this book is not full of self-defense techniques. There are general principals, but not specific techniques. As Larkin says, this is not martial arts. You don’t have to know a fancy technique to cause serious injury using just your body.

There is a lot of good information in this book—information that could save a life. I read it with interest, and I’m sure I’ll read it again."

When Violence Is the Answer Learning How to Do What It Takes When Your Life Is at Stake Tim Larkin 9780316354653 Books Reviews

  • I read through the whole book today and found it a great refresher to what I already know. I'll be honest from the get-go - I didn't spend my money on Tim Larkin's daring book for the true, essential, information packed inside it. I bought it to publicly support the author in his mission of preparing good people to be able to even the odds if/when they find themselves facing imminent danger.

Eleven years ago, after being responsible for taking care of two young nephews on a two-day long road trip, it hit me that I wouldn't know exactly what I would need to do if they ever needed my protection. Until then I had always been able to remove myself from threats before situations escalated because I was aware of the social dynamics coming into play earlier than most and I have never been the type to look for trouble. However, when you have to look after another person you can't always get to safety. I started searching and eventually found Tim online and ordered a set of his self-protection training dvds.

The principles Tim taught then haven't changed. They do require the mental/emotional shift to understanding violence as being a tool available to anybody when it's what is needed to survive. They are true, simple, and easy to absorb and to recall.
Two years later I was fortunate to be able to attend a live two-day training with Tim when he was "Down Under". Totally worthwhile experience because 1) getting on the mats with other students and training the "slow" TFT way really got me "dialled in" as I've never been able to find a training partner here in NZ. 2) It was neat to finally meet Tim - one of the most humble, kind, helpful, guys you will ever meet. A true gentleman is someone who chooses to be gentle not someone who is because gentle is the only option they have. Too many good men in our society today don't know how to use violence successfully to protect the vulnerable from the asocial predators. If that is you, like it was me once, then grab this book and learn how to change that. It does NOT take years of martial arts training. It takes a couple hours of learning the principles and basic physics that every successful act of violence (whether done by a criminal or a hero) is built on.

The message of this book is super controversial in these idealistic politically correct times when most of the powers-that-be don't want the average Joe or Jane Citizen to have access to this sort of knowledge. Information that every person should have available to them. This information has not made me a violent person. Rather it has helped me to dump the silly fight fantasies so many of us carry around from watching un-realistic movie fight scenes etc. True violence is always to be avoided unless you absolutely can't avoid it. Tim talks a lot about how to know when that is going down. I worked in development in a more dangerous part of the world for ten years and never had any real problems because although I am bigger than average I would never be found anywhere sketchy late at night with a couple drinks in me. Over there I observed twice that untrained, unarmed, normally peaceful, people can kill hardened criminals when put in a kill-or-be-killed situation if they get to make the first injury. This is why I chose Tim's training over the other options so long ago. It makes absolute sense because that's how things go down in the real world.
Overall Tim's dvds and books have given me a more peace-filled existence. How so? 1) I understand that avoidable ego-driven fights can unintentionally turn fatal so easily and quickly because we are all equally vulnerable to serious injury - so I won't be baited into a fight. 2) the knowledge I have about what it takes to use violence successfully means I don't need to carry a weapon to be effective. This gives me unspoken confidence - not the kind that looks for trouble but the kind that crims know to not mess with if they have easier options.
Whether you are male or female, young or old, you too can possess that sense of responsible assurance. But only if you understand what you must do when violence is the only answer. I hope to never find myself in such a situation but if I do I have the right software installed in my brain. Thanks Tim!
  • I do not like violence. But when 9/11 happened, I knew I did not want to be a passenger on one of the three planes that were flown into public buildings with great loss of life; I wanted to be one of the passengers on Flight 93 who fought back. They lost their lives, but did not allow their airplane to be used to massacre thousands more innocent lives.

So knowing that karate black belts are awesome fighters (thank you, Chuck Norris!), I started working on a black belt. As I came up to my black belt exam, I realized I still didn't have any idea how to take down a terrorist in an airplane. Perhaps primitive Okinawan karate would have taught this kind of thing, but karate as generally practiced in the USA does not. So I started searching through dozens of other options, finally going to one of Tim Larkins' Target Focus Training seminars with my deputy sheriff son-in-law. After 2 1/2 days of training, we walked out knowing exactly what to do to take down a terrorist in an airplane!

This book is that weekend seminar printed and bound, and able to be read in the comfort of your own home. It will not turn you into a testosterone-driven mad man. It will not make you a homicidal felon. It will simply give you the principles you can use to effectively protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of having your life threatened by a violent felon. You will need to do some training, and the training process is deeply explained in the book. For more specifics on the training, search the web for Target Focus Training's series of DVDs.

This is the real deal. It is based on very effective principles, and can be used by the largest man or smallest woman. I highly recommend the book and the DVDs.

    And I still hate violence!
  • Tim Larkin often says that violence is usually not the answer, but when it is, it is the only answer.

Another note this book is not full of self-defense techniques. There are general principals, but not specific techniques. As Larkin says, this is not martial arts. You don’t have to know a fancy technique to cause serious injury using just your body.

There is a lot of good information in this book—information that could save a life. I read it with interest, and I’m sure I’ll read it again.

Hello, world.

Facebook's algorithms shaping the news. Self-driving cars roaming the streets. Revolution on Twitter and romance on Tinder. We live in a world constructed of code - and coders are the ones who built it for us. From acclaimed tech writer Clive Thompson comes a brilliant anthropological reckoning with the most powerful tribe in the world today, computer programmers, in a book that interrogates who they are, how they think, what qualifies as greatness in their world, and what should give us pause. They are the most quietly influential people on the planet, and Coders shines a light on their culture.

In pop culture and media, the people who create the code that rules our world are regularly portrayed in hackneyed, simplified terms, as ciphers in hoodies. Thompson goes far deeper, dramatizing the psychology of the invisible architects of the culture, exploring their passions and their values, as well as their messy history. In nuanced portraits, Coders takes us close to some of the great programmers of our time, including the creators of Facebook's News Feed, Instagram, Google's cutting-edge AI, and more. Speaking to everyone from revered "10X" elites to neophytes, back-end engineers, and front-end designers, Thompson explores the distinctive psychology of this vocation - which combines a love of logic, an obsession with efficiency, the joy of puzzle-solving, and a superhuman tolerance for mind-bending frustration.

Along the way, Coders thoughtfully ponders the morality and politics of code, including its implications for civic life and the economy. Programmers shape our everyday behavior When they make something easy to do, we do more of it. When they make it hard or impossible, we do less of it. Thompson wrestles with the major controversies of our era, from the "disruption" fetish of Silicon Valley to the struggle for inclusion by marginalized groups.

In his accessible, erudite style, Thompson unpacks the surprising history of the field, beginning with the first coders - brilliant and pioneering women, who, despite crafting some of the earliest personal computers and programming languages, were later written out of history. Coders introduces modern crypto-hackers fighting for your privacy, AI engineers building eerie new forms of machine cognition, teenage girls losing sleep at 24/7 hackathons, and unemployed Kentucky coal-miners learning a new career.

At the same time, the book deftly illustrates how programming has become a marvelous new art form - a source of delight and creativity, not merely danger. To get as close to his subject as possible, Thompson picks up the thread of his own long-abandoned coding skills as he reckons with what superb programming looks like.

To understand the world today, we need to understand code and its consequences. With Coders, Thompson gives a definitive look into the heart of the machine.

"This is a good history of programming and programmers. I have read much of the historical material before in other books but this book manages to present new material in every chapter. This book seems to be targeted for the non-programmer or maybe someone who works with programmers and wants to figure out why they do things the way they do. First - there is not one programmer type but they good programmers share some common qualities that the book delves into for the reader. When my son wanted to become a programmer I feared there was one quality he did not have - ability to deal with frustration. The book details why that ability is essential for all good programmers to survive and thrive. I loved the book so much I purchased copies to give out to co-workers that have to work with coders."

  • Clive Thompson’s new behind the screen look at the tribe of coders is by no means perfect. A journalist by profession, Thompson’s chapters somewhat read like a series of loosely connected articles for the New York Times magazine. But these glances at different aspects of the computer programming world do incisively capture the culture for both good and ill.

Written primarily for those who are not members of the tribe, as a data scientist I cannot say I learned much by reading it. But its depiction of the hyper-masculine, intellectually preoccupied, socially inept world of programming did resonate. Of course, Thompson is not the first writer to depict this world. Nor is he the first to opine that the immense amount of harm caused by these new technologies is the result of the blindnesses of this monoculture. But updating readers on the cultural changes in computing from the 1950s to the 1990s to 2019 is important for everyone who has to live in the partially online modern world.

Thompson also makes a concerted argument that the lack of women and minorities in computers is the result of cultural bias and not in any sense genetic. Though largely relying on anecdotal evidence the argument grows increasingly persuasive as the book advances. I wish Thompson had relied more on data and less on personal testimony. Given, however, that this is an issue with significant cultural and financial implications, it’s encouraging to see this position well-articulated.

I ended up thinking after reading it through that the book is a light and mostly pleasant way for those not in coding to understand something of this ever growing part of modernity. Not a must-read but something that non-coders will both benefit from and enjoy.
  • <em>Coders</em> is a sign of its times instead of comprehensively covering the topic of code, how it works, and where it comes from, Thompson does some of that, which is to be commended, and a lot of fomenting discord through relentless stereotypes about race and sex. He seems to believe women and some people, based on the color of their skin, cannot code as some other groups can, and that implication is disconcerting, pervasive, and annoying in his book.

But Thompson cannot help himself; he is a creature of the media and he doesn't realize the bogosity of the water in which he swims. Instead of focusing on the product and how it is made, he focuses on the race and gender of the people making it. Software can be written by anyone; that is a topic to be celebrated. Thompson repeatedly misses the forest for the trees of race and gender.

There is a great book stashed inside this performatively "woke" book. Thompson keeps showing us glimpses of that great book, then hiding the great book away so he can repeat bland media formulas about how women and minorities are hurt most. News at 11. If this book is read in the far future, it will be seen as yet another example of the media class's obsessions in this age; instead of focusing on technology and how to build the future, Thompson focuses on media-enabled squabbles. We know that you've replaced church with the church of "social justice;" we don't need evangelizing for it in everything you do.

He claims, "Feminism and diversity are, indeed, sore points in the industry" (22). No, they are not; they are sore points in the grievance studies and media industries. Those are studies bent on complaining; tech is bent on building the future. He goes on to claim that "The racial makeup [of most tech cos] is not more diverse," then goes on to admit that Asians are prevalent in tech. Do they not count as diversity? Why does Thompson systematically exclude Asians? His own racial insensitivity shows here; performative wokeness shades back into the racism it claims to oppose. Thompson says early hackers "admired great code even if it came from someone with no rank at all" (37)—isn't that meritocracy?

Thompson asks, "What makes programming so often inhospitable for women?" He assumes it is, ignoring the vast number of successful women in the field. Why not focus harder on what makes coders, rather than the race or sex of the coders? Because that wouldn't reify Thompson's world view. We get it, Clive you are a moral hero while the rest of us are mere struggling pygmies. Maybe one day we can be as good as you demonstrate yourself to be in this book.
